How to crochet a flower

Learn how to crochet a flower that looks like a pansy with my free crochet pattern and complete video tutorial! The flower uses a 4/worsted weight yarn and is about 3 1/2 x 4 inches when finished.

Are crochet flowers beginner friendly?

Some crochet flowers are beginner friendly and some are not.

It is a little more challenging to crochet round projects than it is to crochet flat or square ones. A brand new crocheter needs to start by learning a few basic skills first. This video tutorial will be a really good one for the first few things to learn, before trying this flower or others.

Once you’ve done those, you could attempt this flower, but it will be challenging. The good news for beginners, is that this one comes with a complete video tutorial. However, you may want to play the video at a slower speed, since I didn’t make it quite as slow as a beginner would need.

Difficulty Level: Easy

Finished Measurements: About 3 1/2 x 4 inches

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Pacific (60% Acrylic, 40% Superwash Merino; 213 yds; 100 g; Weight category 4/medium/worsted) in colors #13 Gold, #01 Cream, and #190 Petunia Heather.

Crochet Hook: J (6 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle

Gauge: Not critical for this project.

Flower

With Gold make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st in first st to join – 6 sts. Fasten off Gold.

Rnd 2: With Cream, (join with sc, sc) in first st, 2 sc in each remaining st, sl st in first st to join – 12 sts.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 3, skip next st, [sc in next st, ch 3, skip next st] 2 times, [sc in next st, ch 5, skip 2 sts] 2 times, sl st in first st to join – 5 ch loops. Fasten off Cream.

Rnd 4: With Petunia Heather (join with sc, 5 dc, sc) in first ch loop, (sc, 5 dc, sc) in each of next 2 ch loops, (sc, dc, 8 tr, dc, sc) in each of next 2 ch loops, sl st in first st to join – 45 sts. Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Use as an applique, or back with felt and attach to a hair clip or headband. Attach to a garland, or add a hanging loop to use as an ornament, or tie with a ribbon over gift wrap to decorate a gift.
