What crochet stitch looks like a waffle?
The crochet stitch that looks like a waffle is called just that, Waffle Stitch. It’s made with a combination of post stitches and standard stitches, usually taller stitches like double or treble crochet stitches.
In the first row you do all standard stitches. In the second row, you establish the pattern by alternating single or groups of standard and post stitches. In the third row you swap these. The stitches that were standard in row 2, you work as post stitches. The stitches that were post in row 2, you work as standard stitches.
It’s that alternating that makes the waffle pattern. If you need help with post stitches, or with the waffle stitch pattern, see my crochet waffle stitch tutorial here.
What can you make with waffle stitch crochet?
In this post I have free crochet patterns for a crochet waffle stitch dishcloth and a crochet waffle stitch hotpad/trivet/potholder. You can crochet both of those items in waffle stitch. It’s a great choice for both items.
I also have a crochet waffle stitch pattern for a matching hat, scarf, and mitten set for kids. Waffle stitch is a great choice for these items as well! In addition to being textured, it is thicker than standard crochet fabric, so it adds extra warmth to these winter accessories.
Crochet waffle stitch would also be an excellent choice for blankets and pillows. Ravelry is my favorite place to search for crochet patterns, so I suggest looking there for additional ideas.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Finished Measurements: Dishcloth, about 6 3/4 inches square after blocking; Hotpad, about 7 inches square.
Yarn: King Cole Cottonsmooth DK (100% Mercerized Cotton; 218 yds; 100 g; yarn weight category: 2/Fine/Sport) About 60 yds #3522 Pale Pink for the dishcloth; about 125 yds for the hotpad.
This yarn is labeled as a 3/DK/Light. At 19 WPI it falls closer to a 2/Fine/Sport weight yarn. If you are substituting with a different yarn, use one in this smaller weight category for best results.
Also, Cottonsmooth DK is labeled as machine wash, dry flat. However, I have both machine washed and dried it with good results.
Crochet Hook: F (3.75 mm), or size needed to match gauge.
Notions: Tapestry needle
Gauge: 20 sts x 11 rows = About 4 inches in 3 x 1 Waffle Stitch.
