What materials will I need to crochet this jellyfish?

The yarn that I used for this jellyfish crochet pattern is King Cole Forest Recycled Aran. Although this yarn is listed as aran (worsted) weight, I measured its wraps per inch at 15, which according to the Craft Yarn Council of America, makes it smaller than worsted weight. 15 wpi could fall in three different weight categories, all smaller than worsted weight. Based on how the yarn looks and feels as I work with it, I’m calling it DK/3/Light.

King Cole Forest is made of recycled fibers, which I love, and that is good for the environment. Instead of sending scraps from the milling process to the trash, they combine and reuse them to create recycled yarn. The colorway that I used, #1915 Balvain Woods, is perfect for a blue jellyfish! It is light blue with subtle flecks of pink and purple in it. You can purchase this yarn through your local yarn shop. I think you’ll love it!

I used an I (5.5 mm) crochet hook. My favorite hooks are the Streamline Resin hooks from Furl’s Fiberarts. They are lightweight, have an inline hook shape, and a thick, ergonomic handle.

7 Colorful crochet hooks fanned out over a white surface. Text on the image reads: Banana Moon Studio.

In addition to those basics you will also need a little bit of felt to make the triangular pocket on the back of the jellyfish if you plan to use it has a page corner bookmark. To attach the felt to the crochet jellyfish, you will need either a sewing needle and thread to match your yarn, or if you prefer, fabric glue.

And lastly, of course, you will need a tapestry needle to weave in your ends.

Finishing

Weave in ends.

To use as a page corner bookmark, cut a right triangle out of felt. The two short sides should be about 2 inches in length. Place it on the WS of the jellyfish body by placing the right angle at the center top of the jellyfish body.

Sew with needle and matching thread, or use fabric glue, to secure the two short sides to the back of the jellyfish, leaving the long edge open to form a triangular pocket.

You can also use this jellyfish as a more traditional bookmark without the pocket just by placing it between the pages you want to mark.

This also makes a cute applique to attach to blankets, clothing items, and more!

That finishes this adorable blue jellyfish crochet bookmark pattern. I hope you loved making your own little jellyfish. I would LOVE to see your finished jellies! You can share them on Instagram and tag me, or you can join my Facebook group and share them there.
