A free crochet sweater pattern for women

Stigler Sweater is a free crochet sweater pattern for women! It is written in sizes from XS to 5X, so if you are looking for a crochet plus size top, or a crochet small size top, this is the one!

This post contains affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, I will earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. See my disclosure for details.

It is crocheted in Berroco Remix, which is a worsted weight yarn made completely of recycled fibers. It is 30% nylon, 27% cotton, 24% acrylic, 10% silk, and 9% linen. I used color #3930 Smoke. You will need 4 to 7 skeins, depending on the size of sweater you plan to make.

There will be sewing, but I have a video!

The stitch pattern that I used in this design does not lend itself well to working in the round. So I decided to make this sweater in pieces and seam them together at the end. I thought this would provide a wonderful opportunity to teach others how to sew together a crochet sweater. See the free video tutorial here!

The free crochet sweater pattern for the Stigler Sweater is here in this post. If you prefer a PDF with schematic included, you can purchase that on Etsy or Ravelry.

As with all my patterns, please do not make copies for others. Instead, please direct them to my website to get their own.

Finishing
Seaming a free crochet sweater pattern. Gray, textured sweater front and back sewing together with the sleeve held on by orange clips for sewing. Also with large gold scissors and a teacup on a brown, wooden table. Text reads: Banana Moon Studio.

Seaming tips! When seaming crochet pieces, don’t place your yarn needle through large holes in the fabric. The seaming stitches will pull those open, making them look bigger. Instead, place your needle through the middle of stitches, but always under at least two strands of yarn. When working along the sides of the sweater, or the underarms, work at least one full stitch in from the edge. When seaming the shoulders, working through the tops of the stitches is fine. Need more help with this? See my free video tutorial here!

Place front and back panels side by side with RS facing, lining up side edges. Using yarn and yarn needle, sew side seam with mattress stitch. Fold each panel in half to bring the other side edges together with RS facing and seam with mattress stitch.

Turn sweater WS out and line up shoulders. Using a back stitch, seam shoulders.

Bring underarm of each sleeve together with RS facing and seam underarms with mattress stitch.

With sweater WS out and sleeve RS out, place one sleeve inside the sweater, lining up side seam of sweater with underarm seam of sleeve, and center of sleeve cap with shoulder seam of sweater. Secure sleeve with clips, safety pins, or locking stitch markers. Using a whipstitch, sew sleeve into sweater.

Weave in all ends. Enjoy!
