What crochet stitches are used for this poncho?
In this pattern you start by making two long side panels that fold over the shoulder. These side panels use basic crochet stitches. The panels begin with two rows of single crochet, followed by two rows of double crochet, and that sequence repeats for the length of the panel.
The center panels use the Arcade Stitch, a pretty lace crochet pattern stitch that includes crochet fans, which are explained in detail in the pattern below and the accompanying video tutorial.
After sewing the panels together, which is easier than it seems, you finish the poncho with ribbed edging and decorative buttons.
Each step of the process has a video tutorial to go with it! So even less-experienced crocheters can enjoy this girls poncho crochet pattern.

Assembly
You’ll find a video tutorial for the assembly here.
Block all pieces to the following measurements:
Side panels width: 3 1/4 [3 1/2, 4, 3 3/4, 4] inches
Side panels length: 21 3/4 [23 1/4, 26, 31 1/2, 34] inches
Center panels width: 6 [6, 6, 7 1/2, 7 1/2] inches
Center panels length: 9 3/4 [9 3/4, 11 1/4, 14 1/4, 15 3/4] inches
With RS up, lay two side panels with long sides parallel and 5 1/2 [5 1/2, 5 1/2, 7, 7] inches between them.
Lay the two center panels between the side panels with the bottom edge of each center panel even with one set of side panel ends. The long edges of the center panels should be overlapped by the side panels by about 1/4 inch. There will be an open space between the top edges of the two center panels.

See the diagram above for a visual explanation of how to lay out the pieces.
While sewing, leave a 6 inch tail at both beginning and ending of sewing and weave these ends in securely rather than tying knots.
With edges of center panels underneath edges of side panels, and using A with a tapestry needle, sew through edges of side and center panels where they overlap with a running stitch or back stitch to secure together.
Edging
You’ll find a tutorial for the edging here.
Note: For each section of the edging I have provided suggested stitch counts, but any odd number of stitches that lays nicely will work.
Row 1: With A and with RS facing, sl st in first st of one short side of poncho, ch 2 (does not count as a st throughout), dc evenly across, turn – 51 [55, 59, 63, 65] dc.
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in first st, *bpdc in next st, hdc in next st, repeat from * across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in first st *fpdc in next st, hdc in next st, repeat from * across, turn.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
Repeat Rows 1-4 for second short side.
Repeat Rows 1-4 for each long side, making sure to work Row 1 over the edges of the newly made front and back edgings. I found that it worked well for me to have 5 dc for every 4 row ends – 90 [95, 105, 125, 135] dc per side.

Collar
Rnd 1: With A and with RS facing, join with sl st at corner of back center panel, ch 1, working across back center panel, *[sc in next ch-sp, sc in next st, sc in next ch-sp, sc in next st, sc in next ch-sp, ch 2, skip 3 sts] across center panel to last 2 sts, ch 1, turn piece, sc evenly across side of neckline, ch 1, turn piece, repeat from * 1 time, sl st in first st to join, do not turn – 57 [67, 65, 71, 69] sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, *dc in each st to first ch-sp, [1 [1, 1, 1, 2] dc in next ch-sp, dc in each st to next ch-sp] across to next corner ch-sp, 1 dc in corner ch-sp, dc in each st to next corner ch-sp, 1 dc in corner ch-sp, repeat from * 1 more time, sl st in first st to join – 67 [77, 75, 83, 89] dc.
Rnds 3-7: Ch 2, fpdc in first st, *bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st in first st to join. Fasten off.
Finishing
Place poncho RS out, folded in half as it will be worn. One set of buttons will go on the left side, and one set on the right side. Buttons are attached through both layers of the poncho, one on the front, and one on the back, sewn together as they are sewn to the poncho.
Place buttons a little less than halfway up from the bottom of the poncho, centered on the ribbed edging. With A and tapestry needle, sew on buttons.
Weave in all ends. Block.
