Crochet cable stitches
There are a lot of different crochet cable stitches out there and clever designers are coming up with new combinations and methods all the time. Most methods use crochet post stitches, which are worked around the post, or body, of the stitches rather than in the tops of them.
You can learn about crochet post stitches in this tutorial.
To crochet a front post stitch, you start on the front of the fabric, the side facing you, and insert your hook around the post of the stitch from right to left, then you work the stitch just as you otherwise would.
To crochet a back post stich, you start on the back of the fabric. You don’t turn the piece around, but you just point your hook toward the back of the fabric, and then insert around the post of the stitch from right to left again, then complete the stitch as usual.

Fasten off with a long tail. Use a tapestry needle to weave long tail in and out through sts of last rnd, then pull tail to close top hole. Use needle and tail to go around through these final sts a few more times, then take tail to inside of hat.
Finishing
Weave in all ends.
If desired, make a yarn pom with the Clover Pom Pom maker and leave ends of center tie long or purchase a faux fur pom.
To attach a pom with ties, take ends of ties to inside of hat through separate holes near top center and tie ends in a bow inside hat.
To attach a pom with an elastic loop, sew a ½ button just inside top center of hat with matching thread. Use crochet hook to pull elastic loop through top, center hole and secure around button.
Always remove poms before washing your hat.
That finishes this crochet cable stitch hat pattern. I would LOVE to see your in-process or finished hats! You can share them on Instagram and tag me or you can join my Facebook group and share your projects there.
