The Talimena Knit Blanket Square was inspired by bright fall leaves. The shape you see repeated in the square is intended to be a leaf with a stem at one end. I’ll admit though that it also looks a lot like scales from a fish or dragon, so you have my blessing to use it that way, LOL.

I named this knit afghan square after the Talimena National Scenic Byway. I name a lot of my patterns after places in Oklahoma, USA, where I’m from. Oklahoma is not well known for beautiful fall foliage, but the Talimena National Scenic Byway is one place in Oklahoma that boasts bright colors in autumn. This scenic drive can be found in southeastern Oklahoma and crosses the state line into Arkansas.

What yarn should I knit this afghan square with?

The yarn used in this blanket square is KnitPicks Brava Worsted, a 100% Premium Acrylic yarn that I chose because it is easy to care for, an essential for a blanket. The square weighs just 22 g when finished, which amounts to about 48 yds of yarn, so you can make around four of these squares with one skein of KnitPicks Brava Worsted. Many thanks to KnitPicks for providing the yarn for this design!

Notes

This pattern includes both a chart and line by line instructions.

On the chart, RS rows (odd-numbered) are read from right to left. WS rows are read from left to right. Reading the chart might be a little easier if you think of the white box sections as stockinette stitch, and the dotted box sections as reverse stockinette stitch.

Finishing

Weave in ends. I suggest mattress stitch as a way to attach squares together. You can see a tutorial for mattress stitch here.
