Knit Mittens Pattern

McAlester Mittens is a knit mittens pattern with light texture made in the ultra soft Cascade Yarns Eco Duo. These would make a luxurious treat for yourself or a loved one! They start with a 3 inch ribbed cuff, and then you will use charts to create the texture on the top of the hand.

What yarn should I use for this knit mittens pattern?

Cascade Yarns Eco Duo is a mixture of 70% undyed baby alpaca and 30% undyed merino wool. Each skein contains 100 g and 197 yds of worsted weight yarn. As I said, Cascade Eco Duo is amazingly soft! Truly one of the softest yarns I’ve ever used! It comes in unwound hanks, so you’ll need to wind it into a center-pull ball or cake yourself. If you don’t have a swift and ball-winder, why not get one?! They are super useful tools to have. You can get this beautiful set from We Crochet. Or you can use my tutorial here to wind it into a center-pull ball without any equipment!

Buy Cascade Yarns Eco Duo here! You will need just one skein in order to make one pair of mittens. I made the largest size and they used about 135 yds of yarn.

I’ve never knit mittens. How can I learn?

A few years ago I designed a really basic knit mittens pattern that was part of a winter accessories set called Wanette Winter Set. Along with that, I made some tutorial videos to demonstrate the different parts of knitting mittens. McAlester Mittens use similar techniques, though not exactly the same. If you are new to knitting mittens, I suggest watching those videos to help you with any parts you may not know how to do.

Learn to knit the ribbed cuff here.

Learn how to make the thumbhole, fingertip decreases, and thumb here.

Additionally, you will need to know some common knitting decreases and I have some videos for those here.

What sizes of mittens are included in this knit mittens pattern?

The McAlester Mittens knitting pattern includes four sizes for children and adults. The smallest size is for hands that are about 6 inches around the palm, and the largest size is for hands that are about 9 inches around the palm. So you can knit these mittens for both children and adults.

What else will I need to make the McAlester Mittens?

You will need US size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles. I used a 32 inch circular and the magic loop method, which you can see demonstrated in the tutorial video I referenced above. However, you can also use double pointed needles (DPNs) if you prefer. You will also need a yarn needle to weave in your ends.

Where can I get the McAlester Mittens knitting pattern?

You can purchase this knit mittens pattern on Ravelry or Etsy. There will likely be times in the future that I offer this pattern at a discount or even free! Subscribe to my newsletter to be sure that you don’t miss that opportunity!
