Hinton Hat is a terrifically-stretchy free crochet hat pattern with a unique construction method that you can make for babies, kids, and adults. This hat is worked almost entirely flat and from side to side! It uses the simple single crochet stitch, but worked only through the back loops of stitches so that this great squishy, stretchy fabric is created. Using a striping yarn with this pattern means that the colors stripe vertically instead of horizontally. Read on for more details and the free crochet pattern!

What yarn should I use for the Hinton Hat?

For this free crochet hat pattern I suggest you use We Crochet / Knit Picks Chroma Worsted. This is a soft worsted weight/4/medium yarn that comes in 25 striping colorways. It is easy to care for by machine washing in cold water and tumbling dry on low. It is composed of 70% Superwash Wool and 30% Nylon. Each ball is 198 yds and 100 g. All sizes except the largest take just 1 ball of yarn. You’ll need a second ball for the largest size. You can order Chroma Worsted from We Crochet here.

What else will I need to crochet this hat?

You will also need an I/9/5.5 mm crochet hook and a yarn needle to crochet this fun hat.

Finished Measurements Circumference (unstretched) 13 [15 ¼, 17 ½, 19 ¾]”; Finished Height 9 ½ [11, 11 ½, 12 ¼]”.

Yarn We Crochet Chroma Worsted [70% Superwash Wool, 30% Nylon; 198 yds; 100 g; yarn weight: 4/medium): 1 [1, 1, 2] balls #28052 Seahorse

Crochet Hook I/9 [5.5 mm], or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions Yarn needle

Gauge 16 sts x 18 rows = About 4” when unstretched.

Hat

Ch 39 [45, 47, 49]

Row 1 Sk first ch, sc in each rem ch, turn – 38 [44, 46, 48] sts.

Row 2 Ch1 , sc BLO until 2 sts remain, turn – 36 [42, 44, 46] sts.

Row 3 Ch 1, sc BLO in each st, turn.

Rows 4-9 Alternate repeating Rows 2 and 3 – 30 [36, 38, 40] sts.

Row 10 Ch 1, sc BLO in each st of last row, Sc BLO in 2 skipped sts of Rows 7, 5, 3, and 1, turn – 38 [44, 46, 48] sts.

Row 11 Ch 1, sc BLO in each st, turn.

Repeat Rows 2-11 for pattern, ending last rep with Row 9.

Work a total of 59 [69, 79, 89] rows in pattern.

Turn work, bring beginning edge up behind and even with working edge. Ch 1, working through BLO of working edge, and both loops of beginning edge, sl st through both thicknesses to seam. When you get to the skipped stitches from short rows along working edge, continue seaming by working through each of the skipped sts in turn along with the next st along the beg edge, do not fasten off. Take hook out of loop momentarily, turn hat RS out, pull yarn ball/skein through center hole if possible, reinsert hook. Ch 1, sc2tog around opening, working into row ends, always placing hook under at least 2 strands of yarn – 5 [6, 7, 8] sts. Fasten off with a long tail.

Finishing

Using a yarn needle, work long tail back and forth through tops of stitches around center hole and pull to close like a drawstring. Pull ends to inside of hat and weave in ends.

Bottom edge may be a little ruffled. This is okay. It will stretch out flat when worn.
