I also have a free crochet pillow cover pattern that matches these country-themed crochet coasters! Cowhide Pillow is an 18 inch pillow that uses the same yarn, colors, and stitches.
I really enjoyed crocheting both of these projects, more than I thought I would actually. While crocheting these I had a great time relistening to the fantasy/romance Throne of Glass audiobook series by Sarah J. Maas and crocheting in every spare moment I had. It was a fun time!
The colorwork requires just enough concentration to be interesting, but not so much as to be difficult. All of the stitches in these two projects are single crochet, so with a little help figuring out the color changes, even advanced beginners can crochet this coaster and the matching pillow.
Country Western decor
These coasters and the matching pillow would coordinate beautifully with other rustic, cowboy, or western decor like leather furniture, antler chandeliers, horseshoes, animal skin rugs, hunting trophies, and denim. Or they would be perfect with farmhouse decor like rough wooden furniture, antique milk jugs, and gingham.
I’d love to hear how you would fit these coasters into your decor! Share your ideas with me in the comments.

How to change colors
When changing colors, work the sc before the change to the last yo, yo with the new color, complete the st, and then work the next st in the new color. Leave both ends on the WS of your piece.
How to handle colors
You can make “floats” or strands of yarn across the back of your piece between sections of the same color if you would like and just have one strand of each color in use at all times. Just be certain that you aren’t making these floats too tight. Each float will need a little give in it so that your piece can stretch without being pulled tight in spots.
What I preferred to do was wind off small center-pull balls of yarn using this method to use as bobbins. Each section of Taupe or Natural had its own bobbin so that I didn’t make many floats across the back. This does tend to cause more tangling, but I found it manageable. When a bobbin runs out, add in a new one in the same way that you would change colors.
Either way, I suggest that when turning between rows, you turn back and forth in opposite directions instead of always turning in the same direction. Alternating directions of your turning causes less tangling.
