Let’s talk about the spiral center of this blanket
This space themed crochet blanket pattern is special because the center of it is a spiral of two colors.

In order to make the spiral, you will have to work a little differently than the way you usually work in the round. I originally published this pattern several years ago with a magazine, and I’ve seen some makers nail it, and I’ve seen others not nail it.
I will explain it here the best I can in words. If you need additional help, watch the tutorial video found below.
The pattern instructions also explain it, but with more abbreviated language. So this explanation is in plain English.
First, you begin the blanket with a Magic Ring in white. In the Magic Ring you will work 6 stitches in white. Place a locking stitch marker in the first one to keep track of the start of the round. When you start each successive round, move the stitch marker up into the first stitch of that round.
After working the 6 stitches in white, you will take your hook out of the loop of white yarn and put a locking stitch marker through the loop to keep those stitches from unraveling.
Then you will put a slip knot of blue on your hook. You will not join to the white stitches, you will just work the first blue single crochet directly into the Magic Ring, and then follow it with five more blue stitches.
That completes Round 1. You do not join at the end of the round, and you do not turn.
Round 2 begins by continuing with the blue yarn. You place the first stitch of Round 2 directly into the first stitch of Round 1. You will work in blue, stitching into white stitches, increasing as you go, according to the pattern instructions below.
Halfway through Round 2, you will come to the end of the white stitches from Round 1. At this point, you will remove the loop of blue from your crochet hook, take the stitch marker out of the white loop, put it through the blue loop, and put your hook into the white loop.
Then you will work the second half of Round 2 in white, stitching into the blue stitches, increasing as you go, according to the pattern instructions below. When you’ve worked an increase into the last stitch before the beginning of round (BOR) stitch marker, you’ve finished Round 2.
Each remaining round of this space themed crochet blanket pattern continues with the color that you were using at the end of the round before. You work half the stitches in this first color until you get to the last stitch of the other color, where you left the loop with the stitch marker in it.
Then you switch your hook to the other color, leaving a stitch marker in the live loop, and work the second half of the round in the second color.
Stay tuned for the tutorial video, or watch the hat video linked above to see how the technique works.

Notes
The colors in this blanket spiral around one another.
The blanket begins with half the stitches in color A. When you finish the color A stitches, you will take the color A loop off your hook, put a locking stitch marker in the loop to keep it from unraveling, put a slip knot of color B on your hook, and then make the color B stitches. You will not join the last stitch to the first one at the end of the round.
The next round begins by continuing with color B and placing the first stitch directly into the first color A stitch of round 1. Put a locking stitch marker into the first stitch to mark the beginning of the round. You will continue working in color B for half the round, working all of these stitches into color A stitches from round 1.
Next you will take the color B loop off your hook, move the stitch marker from the color A loop to the color B loop, put your hook in the color A loop, and begin stitching into the color B stitches for the second half of round 2.
If you aren’t familiar with this method of working, I highly suggest you watch my video tutorial until you get the hang of it. It is different from the normal method of working in the round.
