This is a simple crochet cowl pattern, free along with a matching crochet beanie. This cowl is made largely in half double crochet stitch with columns of chain spaces that make the diagonal lines you see on the cowl.

What materials are needed for this crochet cowl?
This crochet cowl pattern and matching hat are made in Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Effects #16 Grapes. You’ll need 2 skeins of this yarn to make both the hat and cowl.
The hat requires about 60g of yarn; the cowl needs about 120g. If you are only making the cowl, you could make it a little smaller and use just one skein, but I think you’ll find that the measurements are just about perfect as they are. If, however, you decide to make it smaller around, decrease your starting chain by 8, and then you can follow the directions just as they are until you are happy with the width of it.
You will also need a crochet hook, of course. I used a K (6.5 mm) crochet hook. Unless your gauge is really off, you should be fine using the same size. A cowl needs to fit, but if it’s not exactly the same size, that’s alright, of course. My favorite crochet hooks are the Streamline resin hooks from Furls Fiberarts.
You will also need one locking stitch marker and a tapestry needle.

What techniques and skills are needed to crochet this cowl?
This cowl uses simple half double crochet stitches and chains. That would seem very easy, but there is one thing that might make this a little bit tricky.
Half double crochet stitches half a top that sits to the side of its body, or post. When the half double crochet (hdc) stitch comes off your hook the top is slightly to the right of its post. When you look at the back side of a row the top is slightly to the left of the post.
Keeping this in mind as you work will help keep you from getting confused between the chains that create the lines and the stitch tops on either side of them.
The interesting thing that happens with this stitch is that the chain spaces in this cowl are technically stacked one on top of the other, but the lines made by them slant diagonally because of this characteristic of hdc stitches.

Ch 96, taking care not to twist ch, sl st in first ch to join.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in first 3 chs, place m in first st and move up as work progresses, hdc in next 4 chs, ch 1, skip next ch, *hdc in next 7 chs, ch 1, skip next ch, repeat from * around, do not join or turn – 84 sts.
Rnds 2-30: *Hdc in next 7 sts, ch 1, skip ch sp, repeat from * around, do not join or turn.
Row 31: [Hdc in next 7 sts, ch 1, skip next ch sp] 2 times, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next st – 18 sts. Fasten off.
Weave in all ends. Block. Finished!
