Free Crochet Beanie Pattern for Men

A man stands facing away from the camera. He wears a crochet beanie pattern for men with subtle texture. Text on the image reads: Banana moon studio.

Men’s crochet beanie

This crochet beanie pattern for men has a subtle texture that works well for those that don’t want to wear something flashy. And it also manages to be interesting to crochet since it uses more than just one kind of stitch.

Although this crochet beanie was designed with men in mind, it includes four sizes from baby through adult, and works just as well for women and girls as it does men.

What kind of crochet beanies are best for men?

Well, we can only speak in generalities here because not all men have the same prefernces.

However, in my own experience, a lot of men prefer subtle or very classic textures, patterns, and colors.

My husband is happy wearing a ribbed hat, but not a shell stitch or ripple stitch hat.

He prefers a solid colored hat, and doesn’t mind a pom pom on top if it’s team colors, but otherwise prefers not to have one. He’s fine with a conservative two-colored stripe, but doesn’t want more color than that.

So those are general ideas, but if the man you are making this for is someone you know well, then you probably know them best or can just ask what they prefer.

I designed this hat to take my husband’s preferences into consideration, but also to account for my own preference for something other than basic single crochet.

A scarf to match?

My Norman Scarf is a match for this beanie! Sort of…

Norman Scarf and Marshall Beanie use the same stitch pattern, but differently.

A woman stands outside wearing a striped crochet scarf over a black jacket. Text on the image reads: Banana Moon Studio.

Norman Scarf has the first row in red, and then the next two rows in white. From there, you change colors every other row, finishing with one row of red. That’s what makes the fun stripes.

But Marshall Beanie is the same stitch pattern in a solid color. The hat has a subtle texture that I found it difficult to capture in the photos.

So if you want to add stripes to the beanie or make the scarf solid, then you would have a matched set.

Notes

This hat begins by crocheting a ribbed band and then seaming the ends of it to make a circle. Then you will crochet into the row ends of the band to begin the main stitch pattern. The last 5 to 7 rounds will include decreases to finish the hat.

Turning chains never count as stitches.

Finishing

Thread the long tail through a tapestry needle and weave the end back and forth through the tops of the stitches of the final round. Pull the tail to close the center. Weave the tail back and forth through the stitches once or twice more to secure and then take it to the inside of the hat.

Weave in all ends. Enjoy!
