How to crochet an Easter egg
An egg is kind of an odd shape to put in the middle of a crochet square isn’t it? That’s why it took a lot of trial and error to figure out the shape and stitches to put an egg shape in the center of a crochet granny square.
This Easter egg blanket square begins with a magic ring that has 12 double crochet (dc) stitches worked into it. From there, there are basic stitches of many different heights in order to create the egg shape. There are three rounds in your chosen bright color to create the Easter egg.
The fourth round is white and again, has to use stitches of many different heights in order to turn that crochet Easter egg into a square.
Just be sure to follow the written instructions below, and if you need some video guidance, there are helpful video links included in the pattern to show you the stitches used.
The final round is done in the same color as your egg, or you could use white if you prefer not to border each square. Another option might be a grass green color if you like that idea better. The fifth round of the granny square is a pretty simple round of single crochet (sc).
What supplies will I need to crochet this square?
To make this free Easter crochet pattern you’ll need a size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook and worsted weight yarn.
My favorite crochet hooks are Streamline Resin crochet hooks from Furl’s Crochet. They come in lots of beautiful swirly colors. They feature an inline hook shape (my favorite) and a thick, ergonomic handle. They are lightweight and smooth. All around just wonderful to use.
The yarn I used for these Easter egg crochet squares is Cascade Yarns Anthem Worsted. You can purchase or order this yarn from you local yarn store. It is a worsted weight yarn made of 100% Acrylic. It is a nice soft yarn that you’ll love working with! It makes for an easy care holiday blanket.
That Easter egg shape also looks like an avocado…
You’re right, it does! I originally designed this square with a peacock feather in the center, believe it or not! I heard from many readers that it would also make an excellent Easter egg square or avocado square.
The peacock feather variation is already available on my blog here. I will soon be adding the avocado variation.
The good news is that the PDF version of the Easter Egg Square will include details on all three variations, so you get them all with one pattern PDF! The only differences between the three blanket squares are the colors used and their placement.

Hi. I thoroughly enjoyed this pattern and have made a few but I noticed in round 4 you have written (dtr, ch 2, tr, dc) and I was wondering is this ment to be (dc, tr, ch2, tr, dc). I’m not sure as I’m fairly new to crocheting but it is what I’ve done. Hope this helps future followers of this blog. Thanks again xxx
Hi Amy. Thanks for the kind words! The pattern is actually correct as written, though I know it might seem a little odd. If you place two stitches there instead of the one dtr, you wind up with 13 stitches along that side instead of 12 like all the other sides of the square. As for the height, after extensive ripping and redoing I found that the height of the dtr worked best here for me.
