They are also a really great way to try out a new stitch or technique. You can work a small project with the new skill you’re learning to try it out in a small, but useful project. Any crochet square that works out to be 6 to 8 inches wide can be a dishcloth if you stitch it in cotton yarn like We Crochet Dishie.
Dishcloth crochet patterns are also excellent gifts! I can’t think of a friend of mine that wouldn’t love a cute seasonal dishcloth rolled and tied with a ribbon and cute gift tag as a small “thinking of you” gift.
And they are also a great way to use up scrap yarn! If you have cotton yarn in your stash, dishcloths are a great way to use that up. Even if you don’t have the right colors to crochet this gingham dishcloth, you can use any colors you have on hand to make a fun, colorful checked dishcloth.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Finished Measurements: 7 1/2 x 8 inches
Yarn: We Crochet Dishie (100% Cotton; 190 yds; 100 g; yarn weight category 4/Worsted/Medium): #25403 Clementine, #25409 Swan, and #28245 Clementine Twist.
Note that Swan and Clementine are available in cones (760 yds; 400 g). This may be a good choice if you plan to make several items as the cones are a little cheaper than the same amount of yarn in skeins.
Yardage: 18 yds Swan, 37 yds Clementine Twist, 18 yds Clementine
Crochet Hook: J (6 mm), or size needed to match gauge.
I use and recommend Furl’s Streamline Metal crochet hooks!
Notions
Gauge: 14 sts x 16 rows = About 4 inches in Gingham Stitch Pattern. To check gauge use the Gingham Stitch Pattern to make a swatch with 2 columns of 2 squares each. After blocking, this should measure about 4 inches square.

This dishcloth will be made in columns that are attached together as you work them.
Each column consists of squares that are 7 sts wide and 8 rows tall. Each column of squares alternates between 2 colors. The first column will alternate Swan and Clementine Twist. The second column will alternate Clementine Twist and Clementine. And then working across the piece, you will alternate these two columns.
In the instructions, I will use the name Twist for the multicolored yarn so that it doesn’t get confused with the solid Clementine color.
To change colors between squares, at the end of the last row of the first color, when you work the last single crochet, insert the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop, then drop the first color and yarn over with second color, pull this second color through the two loops to finish the stitch.
In order to minimize the number of ends to weave in, I suggest that you carry the unused color of yarn up the side of your work. You will do this each time you make a turning chain on the side where you’ve changed colors. Lay the yarn to be carried across the top of the working yarn and then make the chain as usual, capturing the unused color inside of the chain.

Gingham Stitch Pattern
First Column
With Swan, ch 8.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch, turn – 7 sc.
Rows 2-8: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At the end of Row 8, change color to Twist.
Rows 9-16: With Twist, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At the end of Row 16, change colors back to Swan.
Rows 17-24: With Swan, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At the end of Row 24, change color back to Twist.
Repeat Rows 9-24 for First Column pattern.
Second Column

Third Column
With RS facing insert hook into last foundation ch at the bottom of previous column, leaving yarn end 4-6 inches long, pull a loop of Swan through the ch, ch 8.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch, sl st in first and second row ends, turn – 7 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn – 7 sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, sl st in next 2 row ends, turn.
Rows 4-8: Alternate repeating Rows 2 and 3, ending with a Row 2 repeat. At the end of Row 8, change color to Twist.
Row 9: With Twist ch 1, sc in each st across, sl st in next 2 row ends, turn.
Row 10: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Rows 11-16: Alternate repeating Rows 9 and 10, ending with a Row 10 repeat. At the end of Row 16, change color to Swan.
Row 17: With Swan ch 1, sc in each st across, sl st in next 2 row ends, turn.
Row 18: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Rows 19-24: Alternate repeating Rows 17 and 18, ending with a Row 18 repeat. At the end of Row 24, change color to Twist.
Repeat Rows 9-24 for Third Column pattern.
Alternate Second and Third Columns until you’ve reached the correct width.
Gingham Dishcloth
Working in Gingham Stitch Pattern, crochet 4 columns of 4 squares each, or a total of 32 rows per column. At the end of Row 32 of each column, fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in all ends.
