Free Crochet Chemo Cap Pattern

Crochet chemo cap pattern
Canadia Hat is a crochet cap designed with chemo care in mind. It is made in a soft, easy care, light worsted merino wool yarn. The linked stitches used in the hat keep the fabric pretty solid without being stiff.
I’ve designed this crochet beanie in lime green in honor of a beloved family member that has experienced lymphoma. The lymphoma ribbon is lime green. It will be just as soft and lovely in any color though, so no worries if lime green isn’t for you or your loved one.

What materials do I need for this chemo cap?
You’ll need a light worsted weight yarn to crochet this hat. I used We Crochet Swish Worsted in color #25139 Peapod.
Shop Swish Worsted yarn from We Crochet!
You’ll need a crochet hook that will allow you to match my gauge. Gauge is critical for an item that needs to fit someone, like a hat. I used a size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook from Furl’s Fiberarts.
I use and recommend Furl’s Streamline Metal crochet hooks!
You’ll need one locking stitch marker and a tapestry needle. If you want to attach a pom then you’ll also need the pom, and possibly a 1/2 inch button, sewing thread, and a sewing needle if the pom has an elastic loop.

The hat begins by working back and forth in rows to make the ribbed band at the bottom. After seaming the band, you will single crochet into row ends of the band and then work up from there to finish the hat.
See this tutorial for help with this hat.

Hat
Ribbed Band
Ch 7 [9, 11, 11, 13, 13, 13]
Row 1: Skip first ch, sc in the bottom ridge loop of each remaining ch, turn – 6 [8, 10, 10, 12, 12, 12] sc.
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc blo in each st across, turn.
Repeat Row 2 for pattern.
Work in pattern for a total of 40 [52, 60, 66, 72, 76, 80] rows from beginning, turn. Making sure not to twist band, bring beginning edge up behind and even with working edge.
Seaming (WS): Ch 1, working through blo of sc and through both loops of foundation chs, sl st across.
Main Body of Hat
Setup Rnd: Turn band RS out, ch 1, *sc in next 9 [12, 9, 10, 11, 8, 9] row ends of ribbed band, skip next row end, repeat from * 3 [3, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7] more times, for Adult S size only sc in remaining 4 row ends, for all sizes sl st in first sc to join, do not turn – 36 [48, 54, 60, 66, 68, 72] sc.
Tip: In the main body pattern, linked treble stitch rounds have no joining slip stitch. Therefore, when you begin each double crochet stitch round, there is no joining slip stitch to skip. Each double crochet round does have a joining slip stitch, so at the start of each linked treble stitch round, there will be a joining slip stitch to skip.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 3 (does not count as a st), begltr in first st, ltr in each st around to last st, lastltr in last st, turn. (See Special Stitches section above for definitions of these abbreviations).
Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in each st around, sl st in first dc to join, turn.
Alternate repeating Rnds 1 and 2 for pattern, ending with a Rnd 1 repeat.
Work in pattern for a total of 4 [6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 8] rnds beginning with Setup Rnd.
Tip: If you would like the hat to be longer, each set of 2 rnds that you add here will add an additional 1 1/4 inches of length.

Finishing
Weave in all ends.
To attach a pom (optional), sew a ½ inch button just inside top center of hat. Use crochet hook to pull elastic loop of pom through top center hole and secure it around button.
If the pom has two ties, pull them through two different spaces on either side of top center and tie in a bow inside hat.
Always remove poms before washing.
That finishes this crochet chemo cap pattern! I hope you’ve enjoyed making yours!

Fellow Blog Hoppers: Copy and paste the code from the post above. Don’t use the all caps code from the main blog hop page! ????
Thank you for this beautiful hat. I must be doing something wrong, because after trying two different browsers and pasting the code in to be sure it’s not incorrect, it still says the code is invalid.
Hi MJ. Sorry about the confusion with the code. It is CancerChallenge2025 with just the two capitalized letters.
Thank you!
You’re welcome!
