Free triangle crochet shawl pattern

The Alera Shawl is a triangle crochet shawl pattern inspired by the Codex Alera book series by Jim Butcher. This is a fantasy series of six books. This pattern was originally a part of my 2021 Codex Alera Crochet Along. Sadly, you’ve missed being a part of that, but you can still enjoy the free pattern and read the book that inspired it’s design as we did for the CAL!

The Alera Shawl is an asymmetric triangle crochet shawl pattern that begins at one pointed end and increases to the opposite side. It transitions through three different stitch patterns, each with it’s own unique texture.

This design was inspired by a particular clothing item in Furies of Calderon, the first book in the Codex Alera series. Read the book and see if you can guess which one! You can see some of the textures in the shawl close up in the picture below.

The difficulty level of the pattern is Intermediate. The finished measurements are about 19 1/2″ deep x 67″ long.

What yarn should I use for this shawl?

The pattern takes two skeins of Oasis Sport from Ancient Arts Yarn. You can use any available color, however, if you want your shawl to feel true to the book, you will want to use the color Syrah, as I did.

If you prefer to work with stash yarn you’ll want 700 yds of a thinner sport weight, or fingering weight yarn that is as close to 80% Merino and 20% Baby Camel as possible.

Ancient Arts Yarn Oasis Sport qualifies as a 2/Fine/Sport weight because of its ratio of length to weight. However, when I measured wraps per inch I found that it was the same thickness as a lot of 1/Super Fine/Fingering/Sock weight yarns.

If you decide to substitute with a different sport weight yarn, you may not be able to match my gauge unless you go down 2 or 3 hook sizes, which would make a very stiff fabric, which would be undesirable for a shawl.

I suggest you substitute with a 1/Super Fine/Fingering/Sock weight yarn, or, if you use a sport weight, don’t plan to match my gauge. Use a hook that gives you a nice fabric, maybe a G, maybe even an H. Your shawl will be bigger than mine. It will require more yardage than mine, but it will have nice drape, and that’s important.

  1. Hello! I’m loving the pattern so far, but noticed an omission in the free version: in the TEXTURED SECTION, you completely forgot to add in row 17, which is also a dc2tog row (from what I can tell). Because it’s a dc2tog row, it doesn’t really change your stitch count, which is great, but it is a little confusing that the row doesn’t exist at all.

    1. Thank you so much for bringing that to my attention! I think that must have been a copy and paste mistake. It is fixed now. Enjoy!
