Adorable round potholder crochet pattern

My crochet pattern, Pie Potholders, is a round potholder crochet pattern that looks like decorative pies! If you want to use them to set pots and pans on, you will probably want to leave off the berries. But if you plan to use them as decoration, the berries are an adorable addition! This pattern was originally published in the Feb/Mar 2014 issue of Crochet Today! Sadly, Crochet Today is no longer in publication. What materials are needed to crochet these?

This round potholder crochet patter is made in size 10 thread with a size 7 (1.65mm) steel hook. You’ll need to get Aunt Lydia’s size 10 thread in the following colors to make the set: #493 French Rose, #310 Copper Mist, #1 White, #494 Victory Red, #484 Myrtle Green, and #131 Fudge Brown.

These aren’t very thick potholders, except of course where the berries are. If you want to make them thicker, you could add a layer of felt or quilt batting between the layers of the potholder.

Thread: Aunt Lydia’s Classic Crochet Thread, Size 10, each ball approx. 350yd/320m (100% Mercerized Cotton)

• 1 ball #0493 French Rose (A)
• 1 ball #0310 Copper Mist (B)
• 1 ball #0001 White (C)
• 1 ball #0494 Victory Red (D)
• 1 ball #0484 Myrtle Green (E)
• 1 ball #0131 Fudge Brown (F)

Crochet Hook: Size 7 (1.65mm) steel crochet hook or any size to obtain correct gauge.

Notions

Gauge: 9 rounds of circle = 4 ¼”/11cm

Special Abbreviations

BLO (back loop only): work in only the back loop of designated st.

FLO (front loop only): work in only the front loop of designated st.

Sc2tog: Insert hook in designated ch or st, pull up a loop, insert hook in next designated ch or st, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Sc3tog: Insert hook in designated ch or st, pull up a loop, (insert hook in next designated ch or st, pull up a loop)2 times, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Special Techniques

Adjustable Ring: Wrap thread around fingers 1 time, insert hook under ring, remove ring from fingers, pull up a loop. See a video tutorial for this here.

Notes

Main portion of each potholder is made of 2 circles placed WS together and edged.

Most pieces are worked with RS always showing. Only Lattice Crust and Cherry Stem have some turning between rows/rnds. Be sure to check and follow instructions for turning.

Strawberry Pie Round Potholder

Make one Circle with A, and fasten off. Make one Circle with B and do not fasten off at end of Rnd 15, place pink and brown circles WS together, and turn work so that the pink circle is facing you. Work Fluted Pie Edging around edges of pink and brown circles, working through both loops of brown circle, and BLO of pink circle. Edge front loops of pink circle with Whipped Cream Edging. Using B and sharp yarn needle, make one small st through both layers at center of potholder to hold layers together. Make 5 strawberries and 2 leaves, working through top layer of potholder only, stitch to center of potholder using picture as a guide. Block as needed. Weave in all ends.

Cherry Pie Round Potholder

Make one Circle with D, and fasten off.  Make Lattice Crust. Make one Circle with B and do not fasten off at the end of Rnd 15. Set Lattice Crust on top of red circle, using locking st markers to hold in place. Place red and brown circles WS together, and turn work so that the red circle is facing you. Work Fluted Pie Edging around edges of red and brown circles and Lattice Crust, working through all thicknesses including edges of Lattice Crust strips when you come to them.  Using B and sharp yarn needle, make one small st through both layers at center of potholder to hold layers together. Make 3 cherries, cherry stem, and 2 leaves, working through top circle and Lattice Crust of potholder only, stitch to center of potholder using picture as a guide. Block as needed. Weave in all ends.

Circle

Make an adjustable ring, ch 2 (does not count as a st). See a video tutorial for this here.

Rnd 1(RS): 12 dc in ring, pull tail to tighten ring, join to first dc with sl st – 12 dc.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each dc, join to first dc with sl st – 24 dc.

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in first dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 36 dc.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in first 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 48 dc.

Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc in first 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 60 dc.

Rnd 6: Ch 2, dc in first 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 72 dc.

Rnd 7: Ch 2, dc in first 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 84 dc.

Rnd 8: Ch 2, dc in first 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 96 dc.

Rnd 9: Ch 2, dc in first 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 108 dc.

Rnd 10: Ch 2, dc in first 8 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 8 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 120 dc.

Rnd 11: Ch 2, dc in first 9 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 9 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 132 dc.

Rnd 12: Ch 2, dc in first 10 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 10 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 144 dc.

Rnd 13: Ch 2, dc in first 11 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 11 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 156 dc.

Rnd 14: Ch 2, dc in first 12 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 12 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 168 dc.

Rnd 15: Ch 2, dc in first 13 dc, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 13 dc, 2 dc in next dc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 180 dc. Fasten off only if project directions direct you to do so.

Whipped Cream Edging

Attach C with sl st to FLO of any dc of Rnd 15 of Circle.

Rnd 1(RS): Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 2 dc in each dc, join to first dc with sl st – 360 dc. Fasten off.

Lattice Crust

With B, ch 5.

Row 1: Sc in 2^nd ch from hook and each remaining ch – 4 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc.

Repeat Row 2 for pattern.

Make 4 short strips by working 30 rows in pattern for each. Make 4 long strips by working 58 rows in pattern for each. Each short strip will be about ¼ in. from edge, and strips will be spaced 1 ½ in. apart. There should be 13 sts between two center long strips, and 18 sts between each long strip and the short strip next to it. There should be 2 sts between the end of a short strip and the ends of the two long strips that it crosses. Arrange strips, weaving the horizontal and vertical strips to make a lattice top “crust” for the “pie”.

Fluted Pie Edging

Rnd 1(RS): With B, ch 1, sc through all thicknesses in each st, join to first sc with sl st – 186 sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in first 14 sc, 2 dc in next sc, (dc in next 14 sc, 2 dc in next sc)around, join to first dc with sl st – 192 dc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, (sc, hdc) in first st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, (hdc, sc) in next st, sl st in next st (scallop made), *(sc, hdc) in first st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, (hdc, sc) in next st, sl st in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st with sl st – 24 scallops. Fasten off.

Strawberry

Note: Stitch marker is placed when working the first st of Rnd 2. As work progresses, move marker up to first st of each rnd.

With D, make an adjustable ring, ch 1.

Rnd 1: 5 sc in ring, pull tail to tighten ring, do not join – 5 sc.

Rnd 2: Sc in first sc, pm, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc)2 times – 7 sc.

Rnd 3: 2 sc in first sc, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc)3 times – 11 sc.

Rnd 4: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc)2 times, sc in last sc – 13 sc.

Rnd 5: Sc in each sc.

Rnd 6: Sc in next 3 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc)2 times – 15 sc.

Rnd 7: (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc)2 times, sc in last sc – 17 sc.

Rnds 8-9: Repeat Rnd 5.

Rnd 10: Sc in next 3 sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc)2 times, work last sc to last yo, yo with E, and complete st with new color – 19 sc. Stuff strawberry with fiberfill.

Rnd 11: Sc2tog 9 times, sc in last sc – 10 sc.

Rnd 12: Sc2tog 5 times – 5 sc. Fasten off with long tail, using yarn needle, weave end back and forth through tops of sts of last rnd. Use tail for sewing strawberry in place.

Leaf

Note: For strawberry leaves work both Rnds 1 and 2, then fasten off with long tail. For cherry leaves work only Rnd 1, then fasten off with long tail. Use long tail for sewing in place.

Ch 13

Rnd 1: Sc in 2^nd ch from hook, *hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next 6 chs, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, turn to work across bottom loop of chs, repeat from *, ending with only 2 sc in last ch, join to first sc with sl st – 26 sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2, *sc in next st, ch 2, repeat from * around, join to first st with sl st – 26 sts.

Cherry

Note: Stitch marker is placed when working the first st of Rnd 2. As work progresses, move marker up to first st of each rnd.

With D, make an adjustable ring, ch 1.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring, pull tail to tighten ring, do not join – 6 sc.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st – 12 sc.

Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc)around – 18 sc.

Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc innext sc)around – 24 sc.

Rnd 5: Sc in each sc.

Rnd 6: (Sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog)around – 18 sc.

Rnd 7: (Sc in next sc, sc2tog)around – 12 sc. Stuff cherry with fiberfill.

Rnd 8: Sc2tog 6 times – 6 sc. Fasten off with long tail, using yarn needle, weave end back and forth through tops of sts of last rnd. Use tail for sewing cherry in place.

Cherry Stem

Ch 16

Row 1: Sc in 2^nd ch from hook, and each ch across – 15 sc.

Rows 2-3: Ch 16, sc in 2^nd ch from hook, and each ch across.

Row 4: Ch 1, working across row ends, sc in each row end, turn – 3 sc. Row 5: Ch 1, sc3tog – 1 st. Fasten off with long tail for sewing.
