Free Lacy Crochet Hair Kerchief Pattern

Crochet hair kerchief for summer!

Summer is for days in the sun and road trips with the top down! Enjoy it all with your hair tied back with this beautiful lace crochet hair kerchief! Going to a festival this summer? Channel a vintage vibe with this crochet head kerchief! It’s a quick finish project too and only takes one ball of yarn! Free pattern below!

The Marietta Kerchief is made with just one ball of We Crochet Comfy in the fingering weight. It is a nice, soft 75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic yarn. I made one of these vintage-inspired hair kerchiefs in #24812 White and one in #25759 Parchment. My thanks to We Crochet for providing the yarn for this design!

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Finished Measurements: About 32 inches wide x 13 inches deep.

Available Sizes: One size to fit older children, teens, and most adults.

Yarn: WeCrochet Comfy (75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic; 218 yds/199.5 m; 1.75 oz/50 g; weight category 1/super fine): Color #24812 White or #25759 Parchment, 1 skein. GET THE YARN HERE!

Crochet Hook: E/4 (3.5 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Yarn needle

Pattern Stitch: Webbed Lace Stitch found on p. 199 of The Harmony Guides Basic Crochet Stitches, edited by Erika Knight and published by Interweave Press.

Gauge: 3 patt reps x 11 rows = About 4.5 inches in Webbed Lace Stitch

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), dc in first st, ch 2, sk 4 sts, *(4 dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 5 sts, repeat from * across to last ch-1 sp made by tch, dc in last ch sp, turn – 78 sts.

Row 3: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), sk 2 sts, (3 dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, *ch 2, sk 5 sts**, (4 dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, repeat from * across to last ch-1 sp made by tch, ending last rep at **, 1 dc in last ch sp, turn – 75 sts.

Rows 20-21: Repeat Rows 2-3 – 15 sts.

Row 22: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), sk 2 sts, (3 dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 5 sts, (4 dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 5 sts, 3 dc in last ch-2 sp, turn – 12 sts.

Ties

Note: There are 16 long ch sps along long edge of kerchief. In Row 1 I will refer to each of these ch sps as a “section” and each section also includes the group of stitches that comes after the ch sp.

Row 1 (RS): With RS facing, ch 18, working along the long edge of bandana sc in bottom of first st, *7 sc in next section, 8 sc in next section, repeat from * across, one additional sc in bottom of last st, ch 19, turn – 122 sts, 2 ch sections

Row 2: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch and st across, turn – 158 sts.

Row 3: Ch 1, sk first st, sc in next and each st across to last st, turn, leaving last st unworked – 156 sts.

Rows 4-6: Repeat Row 3 – 150 sts. Fasten off.

Finishing

    1. Hi Robin. I modeled it on my daughter so that I could work the camera, but the one size will fit older children all the way up to adults. It ties in the back, so it can easily adjust for a range of sizes. Enjoy!

  1. I hope you still answer questions! ???? my gauge is correct, but after the first row or two it seems awfully long. How long should it be before the ties are added?
