Haileyville Hat, a FREE Crochet Pattern

Free crochet hat pattern by April Garwood of Banana Moon Studio

This is “Haileyville Hat,” a crochet pattern. What you really want in a hat is warmth, so this one is long enough to cover your ears, and only has a bit of openwork detail for visual interest.

I love this yarn! It is Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Effects, color #16 Grapes. The hat needs about 60 g of yarn, so you’ll only need one skein, but there is also a matching cowl pattern that needs about 120 g of yarn, so you’ll probably want to get two skeins. Get the cowl pattern, also free, by clicking here.

The hat is made with a band of single-crochet-in-the-back-loop-only ribbing, followed by a body of half-double crochet stitches. Interestingly, the chain spaces that make the swirling lines, are stacked on top of each other, not offset. Half-double crochet stitches have a natural bias, so it makes the lines of spaces swirl around the hat.

I’ve made a two part video tutorial for this design! See the tutorial post here by clicking here.

Difficulty Level: Easy

Finished Measurements: 16 1/2″ around, 9″ tall [42 cm around, 23 cm tall]. The distance around is unstretched. It will stretch to fit almost any adult-size noggin, including mine, which is 23″ around.

Yarn: Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Effects #16 Grapes (100% Superwash wool; 220 yds [200 m]; 3.5 oz [100 g]; CYCA weight 3 or 4 [light worsted]), 1 skein (but if you want to make the matching cowl, pattern available soon, get 2 skeins).

Crochet Hook: K/10.5 (6.5 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions: One locking st marker (m), yarn needle.

Gauge: 17 sts and 12 rows = 4 1/2″ [11.5 cm]

Notes: Hat begins with several rows of sc blo (see Stitch Guide). This is seamed to form a band. Stitches are worked into these row ends, and this forms the base of the hat body. At this point, there is not joining at the ends of rnds, and not turning between rnds. You will place a locking stitch marker in order to keep track of rows.

Stitch Guide:

Single Crochet in the Back Loop Only (sc blo): Insert hook into the back loop only of designated st, complete a single crochet stitch as usual.

Half Double Crochet Two Stitches Together (hdc2tog): Yo, insert hook in first designated st, yo, pull a loop through the st, yo, insert hook in second designated st, yo, pull a loop through the st, yo, pull through all loops on hook.

Hat Band

Ch 11

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, and each ch across, turn — 10 sts.

Rows 2-64: Ch 1, sc blo (see Stitch Guide) in each st across, turn.

After turning at end of last row, bring two short edges of band together with starting end in back. Do not allow band to be twisted. Ch 1, working through both ends, sl st in each st across to seam. Turn band RS out, so that seam is inside — 10 sts.
