Until I got really deep into crochet and knitting, I had never heard of cowls. They are something like a scarf, because they wrap around your neck, but they can’t come unwrapped and fall off because they don’t have ends! A cowl tends to be somewhat snug around your neck, so they really add a lot of warmth and coziness.

What yarn should I get to make this free crochet cowl pattern?
I made my own Kenton Cowl with 3 balls of We Crochet Capra DK in the color Tansy Heather. Many thanks to We Crochet who provided the yarn! My finished cowl weighs 146 g. The three balls of Capra DK weigh 150 g.
I’m always a bit nervous when the amount needed is so close to the actual amount I’m recommending. So here’s my suggestion. If you like to save on yarn, get 3 balls. To be extra certain you have enough, get 4. If you are going to make a gauge swatch (everyone should, but I know not everyone will), get 4 balls.
What else will I need to crochet the Kenton Cowl?
You will need a size I/9, or 5.5 mm crochet hook, unless you need to adjust for gauge, and a yarn needle for weaving in your ends. Finished Measurements: 28 inches around x 11 ¼ inches wide.
Yarn: We Crochet/Knit Picks Capra DK (85% Merino Wool, 15% Cashmere; 123 yds; 50 g; yarn weight category 3/Light): #27661 Tansy Heather, 3 balls is just enough for the cowl. Get 4 if you want enough for a separate gauge swatch.
Crochet Hook: I (5.5 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.
Notions: Tapestry needle
Pattern Stitch: Fan and V-stitch (pg 134 of The Harmony Guides: Basic Crochet Stitches edited by Erika Knight and published by Interweave Press).
Gauge: 2 patt reps x 24 rows = About 4 inches in Fan and V-Stitch.
