Until I got really deep into crochet and knitting, I had never heard of cowls. They are something like a scarf, because they wrap around your neck, but they can’t come unwrapped and fall off because they don’t have ends! A cowl tends to be somewhat snug around your neck, so they really add a lot of warmth and coziness.

What yarn should I get to make this free crochet cowl pattern?
I made my own Kenton Cowl with 3 balls of We Crochet Capra DK in the color Tansy Heather. Many thanks to We Crochet who provided the yarn! My finished cowl weighs 146 g. The three balls of Capra DK weigh 150 g. I’m always a bit nervous when the amount needed is so close to the actual amount I’m recommending. So here’s my suggestion. If you like to save on yarn, get 3 balls. To be extra certain you have enough, get 4. If you are going to make a gauge swatch (everyone should, but I know not everyone will), get 4 balls.
What else will I need to crochet the Kenton Cowl?
You will need a size I/9, or 5.5 mm crochet hook, unless you need to adjust for gauge, and a yarn needle for weaving in your ends. Finished Measurements 28″ around x 11 ¼” wide.
Yarn We Crochet/Knit Picks Capra DK (85% Merino Wool, 15% Cashmere; 123 yds [112.5 m]; 1 ¾ oz [50 g]; yarn weight: 3/light): #27661 Tansy Heather, 3 balls is just enough for the cowl. Get 4 if you want enough for a separate gauge swatch.
Crochet Hook I/9 – 5.5 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Notions Yarn needle

Ch 42
Row 1 (RS) Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sk 3 chs, 9 dc in next ch, sk 3 chs, sc in next ch, repeat from * across, turn – 6 sc, 5 9-dc fans
Row 2 Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in first st, *ch 5, sk 9 dc**, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next sc, repeat from * across to last st, ending last rep at **, 2 dc in last sc, turn – 5 ch-5 sps, 12 dc.
Row 3 Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in first st, *sc in middle st of fan 2 rows below enclosing ch-5 inside of st, sk next dc**, 9 dc in next ch-1 sp, sk next dc, repeat from * across to last st, ending last rep at **, 5 dc in last st, turn – 5 sc, 4 full 9-dc fans, 2 half fans
Row 4 Ch 3 (does not count as a st), sk 5 dc, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next sc**, ch 5, sk 9 dc, repeat from * across to last 5 dc, ending last rep at **, ch 2, sk 4 dc, sl st in last st, turn – 10 dc, 4 ch-5 sps.

Repeats Rows 2-5 for pattern
Work in pattern for a total of 68 rows. Do not fasten off.
Joining
With RS facing, fold cowl in half, bringing beginning edge up in front of and even with current working edge. Ch 1, working through both thicknesses, sl st through top of first dc and bottom of first sc from beginning edge, *ch 3, sl st in ch-1 sp and bottom of fan center from beginning edge, ch 3**, sl st through center dc of fan and bottom of sc from beginning edge, repeat from * across to last st, ending last rep at **, sl st through last dc and bottom of last sc from beg edge – 11 sl sts. Do not fasten off.
Edging
Turn cowl RS out.
Rnd 1 Ch 2 (does not count as a st), *7 dc over edges of next 4 rows, 6 dc over edges of next 4 rows, repeat from * around to last 4 row edges, 7 dc over edges of last 4 rows, join to first st with sl st, turn – 111 dc.
Rnds 2-3 Ch 2, Fpdc in first st, *Bpdc in next st, Fpdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st with sl st, turn.
After Rnd 3, fasten off.
Other Edge
Rnd 1 Join yarn with (sl st, ch 2) just left of seam along opposite edge of cowl, *7 dc over edges of next 4 rows, 6 dc over edges of next 4 rows, repeat from * around to last 4 row edges, 7 dc over edges of last 4 rows, join to first st with sl st, turn – 111 dc.
Rnds 2-3 Repeat as for first edge.
Fasten off.
