What yarn should I use for this hat?

I used Cascade Yarns Boliviana Bulky, which is a super bulky/6 weight yarn. You can make multiple hats with one skein of Boliviana Bulky! You can even make two of the largest size with one skein. I have yardage amounts listed below within the pattern header information. I was surprised by this yarn because it didn’t feel super soft in the skein, but it felt much softer in the finished hat. I’m thinking I may design a matching cowl or scarf to compliment the hat!

Boliviana Bulky is 100% Merino Wool, made in Bolivia. Each large skein includes 200g and 175 yds of yarn.

What knitting needles should I use for this hat?

This hat is knit in the round. You can use DPNs, as I did, or you could use a long circular needle and the magic loop method, or you could use a set of circular needles that is just smaller around then the circumference of the hat. However, if you go with the third option, you will have to switch to one of the others to work the crown decreases. The needle size is US 11 (8 mm).

I personally like wooden DPNs for making hats, like the Sunstruck DPNs from KnitPicks.

Finishing

Weave in ends.

To attach a pom pom with a button loop, use sewing needle and thread to sew a 1 inch diameter button inside very top of hat. With a crochet hook, pull button loop of pom pom through the top center hole of the hat and secure around button.

For a yarn pom pom, use Clover pom pom makers and my tutorial here, or favorite method. When you tie pom in the center, leave the center tie ends long, pull these through separate holes near the top center of the hat, tie in a bow on the inside. Always remove pom poms before washing your hat.

  1. Hi April,
I am in Marly Bird’s 24 Days of Quickies. I was in the process of getting the pattern off your Ravelry shop when my computer crashed. I couldn’t get back on YouTube and I lost the tab to your Ravelry shop. When I tried to go back in, it wouldn’t let me use the code for the free download. Can you please help me out? Thanks!

  2. Hi April,

I just found this pattern and wondered if you have a matching scarf pattern? I have Buttercream Alpaca skeins in super bulky and I’d like to make a set for a friend who is moving to a country in Central Asia where the weather is really cold.

  3. Hi Apri.
Thank you for this lovely pattern. I will be knitting hats for children and teens who are going through Chemo treatments. A change from the plain beanie. Once again thank you.
