This crochet plaid scarf pattern is called Savanna Scarf. It’s actually very easy to crochet! It uses a unique bulky weight yarn that is a blend of nylon, baby alpaca, and merino wool.

What materials will I need to crochet this scarf?
To crochet this plaid scarf you will first need yarn. I used We Crochet Wonderfluff. This yarn has a unique construction that makes it lightweight and fuzzy. The nylon is knit into a tube and baby alpaca and merino wool fibers are blown into the tube.

You’ll need 1 ball each of four colors, I used #28696 Ripple Heather, #28692 Cosmopolitan, #27195 Turquoise Heather, and #29446 Beehive Heather
You will also need a size M (9 mm) crochet hook and a tapestry needle.
What techniques and stitches are needed to crochet this scarf?
This crochet plaid scarf is crocheted in rows starting at one short end. All the rows are worked in an easy single crochet stitch, so this will be an excellent beginner project, or a great TV watching project for an experienced crocheter.

Gauge: 9 sts x 11 rows = About 4 inches blocked in single crochet.

This infinity scarf begins at one short end and is worked in flat rows to the other short end. It is seamed with slip stitches.
I suggest weaving in all ends after seaming. Next you’ll add the surface crochet, weaving in ends as you go. Surface crochet will be easier if there are no loose ends in your way.
Scarf
Ch 23
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch and in each ch across, turn – 22 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Repeat Row 2 for pattern. Work a total of 192 rows in pattern, following the directions below for the Stripe Pattern. Do NOT fasten off.
Stripe Pattern
(Work 10 rows in Ripple Heather, work 6 rows in Cosmopolitan, work 4 rows in Turquoise Heather, work 2 rows in Cosmopolitan, work 2 rows in Beehive Heather) 8 times.
To change colors, work the last sc of the row before the change until you have two loops on your hook and are ready for the last yo. Cut your first color with a 6-8 inch tail. Yo with the new color and pull it through the 2 loops, turn. You are now ready to begin the next row.
Seaming
Using Beehive Heather, and making sure not to twist scarf, bring RS together and short edges even. Ch 1, working through both layers, sl st across. Fasten off.

Notes
Each column of spaces in your finished fabric is a potential place for a stripe. There are 22 columns of spaces in your scarf that begin and end at the seam. Begin each surface crochet stripe at the seam.
Work surface crochet with RS facing.
To begin each stripe of surface crochet, make a slip knot, but do not put it on the hook. Insert hook in first sp above seam from front to back, place slip knot on hook, pull loop on the hook through the space, leaving knot on WS. *Insert hook through next space in row above, yo with working yarn under fabric, and pull up a loop through fabric and through loop on hook (surface sl st made), repeat from * until you get back to seam.
When you’ve worked a surface sl st in final space below seam, cut working yarn with 6-8 inch tail. With hook, pull tail all the way through fabric and loop on hook. With tapestry needle, thread yarn around bottom of sl st above and back through space in fabric where you pulled it out. See photos below for guidance.
Weave in ends after completing each stripe.
Work a surface crochet stripe in the following colors and locations:
In 2nd column of spaces – Beehive Heather
In 7th column of spaces – Cosmopolitan
in 8th and 9th columns of spaces – Turquoise Heather
In 14th column of spaces – Beehive Heather
In 19th column of spaces – Cosmopolitan
In 20th and 21st columns of spaces – Turquoise Heather
Weave in all ends. Block.
