An Alpine Stitch crochet blanket square

This Alpine Stitch crochet blanket square is called Hearth Crochet Square. This granny square is worked from the center, outward and it’s about 8 inches square when finished. The texture and color of the square remind me of a traditional red brick fireplace and hearth, one of the cozy places we love to be when the weather turns chilly in the fall.

Fall Feels Throw and CAL

The Fall Feels CAL began on October 4th and this gorgeous textured Alpine Stitch square is the 4th section of the pattern. In the crochet along we are making a fall throw blanket and chatting about our progress and all things fall in my Facebook group.

Those who participate in the group will be entered to win one of three stitch marker sets during the CAL! It is free to participate in the CAL, though there is an option to purchase a PDF of the pattern if you prefer an ad-free PDF that is easy to download and print.

If you decide to use the free version, please bookmark this page and come back to it when you work on your project rather than trying to print or screenshot the page. Your time on this page helps me get paid for my work, so thank you!

Get all the details about the CAL here and join in the fun!

What yarn will I need for this granny square?

I used Cascade Yarns Pacific for my Hearth Crochet Blanket Square and for the Fall Feels Throw. This is a worsted weight blend of acrylic and merino wool that is soft and easy to care for. Each 100 g skeins contains about 213 yds of yarn. Your local yarn shop is the best place to purchase this yarn. If they don’t have it in stock, they can probably order it for you.

To crochet eight of these Alpine Stitch blanket squares for the Fall Feels Throw you will need 3 skeins of Cascade Yarns Pacific #177 Rooibos Tea. I used this same color to join my squares and edge my blanket, and that will require an additional 2 skeins of the same color.

If you choose to use a different yarn, you will get the best results with a yarn that is the same weight and fiber content.

What else will I need for this alpine stitch crochet square?

You will need a size J (6 mm) crochet hook and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Is there a video tutorial for this crochet granny square?

Yes, there is! This square begins with a magic ring. This is my favorite way to begin granny squares. You will use double crochet, single crochet, half double crochet, chains, and a special stitch called extended front post double crochet to make this square. If you need help with any of that, I’ve made a full video tutorial, and you can watch that on YouTube by clicking the thumbnail image below.
