What materials will I need to crochet this drawstring bag?
First up, you will need yarn. I used Universal Yarn Uptown DK in colors #101 White, #130 Donahue, and #113 Root. The weight category for this yarn is 3/light/DK. You could potentially use a different weight of yarn if you want, but you’ll want to adjust your hook size accordingly so the fabric isn’t too stiff or too floppy.
You will also need a crochet hook. I used a size H (5 mm). My favorite hooks are Furl’s Fiberarts Streamline resin hooks.
You will also need a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
What techniques will be needed for this crochet bag pattern?
For starters, you will crochet two small granny squares, each beginning with a magic ring. I have a magic ring tutorial here and a granny square tutorial here.
Once both squares are made, you have the option to line the wrong side of each with fabric if you don’t want your drawstring pouch to have holes in it.
Next, you whipstitch the squares together around three edges to form the bottom of the pouch. Then you will use single crochet and chains to add the top of the bag. The chain spaces will give you a place to insert the drawstring.
Last, you will create the drawstring by working in foundation single crochet (fsc) until your piece is about 12 inches long. I have a foundation crochet stitch tutorial here.
