Where can I donate crochet hats?
You likely have lots of great organizations or businesses in your community that accept donated handmade hats. Look in your community for organizations like these:
Hospitals
Cancer Centers
Shelters
Organizations that provide items to those experiencing homelessness
Infant crisis centers
Foster care organizations
Other charity organizations
If you can’t find somewhere in your community to donate crochet hats, here are some national and global organizations that happily accept handmade hats:
Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation

What materials should I use for crochet hats to donate?
When you crochet a hat that you plan to donate it’s a good idea to take a few things into consideration.
First, use easy care yarn. A lot of people that are in difficult circumstances don’t have the means to wash hats with special care instructions. If they are getting a chance to wash the hat, they will probably throw into a load of wash with everything else.
This also means that you may want to forgo adding pom poms to your hats. If you do include one, make sure it is removable. Faux fur and yarn poms don’t usually handle the wash well.
If your hat will be donated to babies or those experiencing cancer, be sure to use soft, hypoallergenic materials. Sensitive heads without much hair will not handle scratchy yarn or fibers that can cause allergic reactions.
Often a soft, premium acrylic yarn is a good choice because it checks all of those boxes. Here are a few of my favorite premium acrylic yarns:
We Crochet Brava, comes in a variety of weights
Cascade Yarns Anthem, available at most specialty yarn shops
