Free Crochet Cabled Blanket Square Pattern

A crochet cabled blanket square

Harvest Square is a gorgeous crochet cabled blanket square with two parallel horseshoe cables from bottom to top. It is crocheted in rows and then edged all around. The finished cabled square is about 8 inches square.

Fall Feels CAL and Throw Blanket

The Fall Feels Crochet Along began on October 4th. Each Tuesday a new crochet blanket square is released with a written pattern and complete video tutorial. This crochet cabled blanket square is the last of the six square designs in the CAL and throw blanket. Next Tuesday, November 15th, the assembly and edging instructions will be available and we will wrap up our CAL over that next week.

The throw blanket crochet pattern includes six 8 inch squares. There are 8 of each square, which makes a finished blanket about 48 inches x 64 inches, or about 4 x 5 feet.

What if I’ve never crocheted cables before?

If you’ve never crocheted cables before, then this will be a challenge, but doable. You’ll want to start by learning what post stitches are, if those aren’t familiar to you. What supplies will I need to crochet this square?

You will need worsted weight yarn. I used Cascade Yarns Pacific in #13 Gold. It takes 3 skeins to make the 8 squares needed for the CAL and Fall Feels Throw Blanket, or about 75 yds to make just one square. The best place to purchase Cascade Yarns Pacific is from your local yarn shop (LYS). If they don’t have it in stock, but they carry Cascade Yarns, they can probably order it for you.

You will also need a size J (6 mm) crochet hook. I recommend Furls Streamline crochet hooks as they have an inline head and an ergonomic handle.

Also, you’ll need three stitch markers and a tapestry needle.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Finished Measurements: About 8 inches square.

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Pacific (60% Acrylic, 40% Superwash Merino Wool; 213 yds; 100 g; Worsted Weight/4/Medium): 3 skeins #13 Gold.

Crochet Hook: J/10 (6 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions: 3 Stitch markers, tapestry needle.

Gauge: About 15 sts x 10 rows = About 4 inches square.

Special Stitches

Front post double crochet (fpdc): Yo, insert hook around post of designated st from front to back, yo, pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) 2 times.

Back post double crochet (bpdc): Yo, insert hook around post of designated st from back to front, yo, pull up a loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) 2 times.

Single crochet two stitches together (sc2tog): Insert hook in first designated st, yo, pull up a loop, insert hook in second designated st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops.

Ch 32

Row 1 (WS): Dc in 3rd ch from hook (beginning ch 2 does not count as a st), dc in each ch across – 30 sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in first 5 sts, *skip next 2 sts, fpdc in next 2 sts, working behind 2 sts just made, fpdc in 2 skipped sts, skip next 2 sts, fpdc in next 2 sts, working in front of 2 sts just made, fpdc in 2 skipped sts, hdc in next 4 sts, repeat from *, hdc in last st, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, hdc in first 5 sts, *bpdc in next 8 sts, hdc in next 4 sts, repeat from *, hdc in last st, turn.

Alternate repeating Rows 2 and 3 for pattern.

Work in pattern for a total of 19 rows.

Edging

Note: Each ch 2 space and the joining hdc st count as corner ch sps.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, *(sc in 4 sts, sc2tog) 5 times, ch 2, turn to work down side, use stitch markers to visually divide this edge into quarters, (6 sc across row ends to next st marker) 3 times, 7 sc across remaining row ends, placing last sc in corner, ch 2, turn to work across next side, repeat from *, hdc in first st to join – 100 sts, 4 corner ch sps. Fasten off.
