Free crochet ear warmer pattern

Piedmont Headband is a free crochet ear warmer pattern that is perfect for fall and football season! It is made in the beautifully textured basketweave stitch, which uses post stitches. You can make it in your team colors and wear it to a tailgate party or to the game. It is just the right width to cover your ears. If you aren’t into sports, make it in whatever color your heart desires!

This would make an excellent gift for a student, teacher, or graduate in their school colors. It is quick to finish and uses a small amount of yarn, which makes it especially nice for gifting! They’ll love wearing it to tailgating parties and sporting events for years to come.

What supplies will I need to crochet this ear warmer?

I made this headband in Berroco Lustra. This is a beautiful yarn, but it has been discontinued. I suggest that you use Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino. This yarn is the same weight, it is soft, and comes in a huge variety of colors! See all the colors here. You will need just one skein of your chosen yarn.

You will also need an H (5 mm) crochet hook. My favorite crochet hooks are the Streamline resin crochet hooks from Furl’s Fiberarts.

Set of five Fulr's streamline resin crochet hooks on a wooden stand with a wooden surface, a plant, and a white crochet piece in the background.

As always, you will also need a tapestry needle for weaving in your ends.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Available Sizes: Child [Adult]

Finished Measurements: Circumference 16 [19] inches x 3 inches wide.

Yarn:

I made my Piedmont Headband in Berroco Lustra (50% Peruvian Wool, 50% Tencel® Lyocell; 197 yds; 100 g; yarn weight category: 4/medium/worsted): #3140 Montmartre, 1 skein. This yarn has been discontinued.

I suggest that instead you use Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 220 yds; 100 g; yarn weight category: 3 or 4/ light worsted weight): #48 Deep Ultramarine, 1 skein. One headband takes about 85 yds of yarn, so one skein will be enough to make 2 headbands.

Crochet Hook: H (5 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions: Tapestry needle

Gauge: 15 sts x 13 rows = About 4 inches in basketweave stitch.

Notes

The ear warmer is worked in the round from bottom to top.
