Alera Shawl, a Free Triangle Crochet Shawl Pattern
Free triangle crochet shawl pattern
The Alera Shawl is a triangle crochet shawl pattern inspired by the Codex Alera book series by Jim Butcher. This is a fantasy series of six books. This pattern was originally a part of my 2021 Codex Alera Crochet Along. Sadly, you’ve missed being a part of that, but you can still enjoy the free pattern and read the book that inspired it’s design as we did for the CAL!

The Alera Shawl is an asymmetric triangle crochet shawl pattern that begins at one pointed end and increases to the opposite side. It transitions through three different stitch patterns, each with it’s own unique texture. This design was inspired by a particular clothing item in Furies of Calderon, the first book in the Codex Alera series. Read the book and see if you can guess which one! You can see some of the textures in the shawl close up in the picture below.
The difficulty level of the pattern is Easy+. The finished measurements are about 19 1/2″ deep x 67″ long.
The pattern takes two skeins of Oasis Sport from Ancient Arts Yarn. You can use any available color, however, if you want your shawl to feel true to the book, you will want to use the color Syrah, as I did. Order your yarn here If you prefer to work with stash yarn you’ll want 700 yds of a thinner sport weight yarn that is as close to 80% Merino and 20% Baby Camel as possible.
**A note about yarn substitutions. Ancient Arts Yarn Oasis Sport qualifies as a sport weight because of its ratio of length to weight. However, when I measured wraps per inch I found that it was the same thickness as a lot of fingering weight yarns.
So if you decide to substitute with a different sport weight yarn, you may not be able to match my gauge unless you go down 2 or 3 hook sizes, which would make a very stiff fabric, which would be undesirable for a shawl. So, I suggest you sub with a fingering weight yarn, or, if you use a sport weight, don’t plan to match my gauge. Use a hook that gives you a nice fabric, maybe a G, maybe even an H. Your shawl will be bigger than mine. It will require more yardage than mine, but it will have nice drape, and that’s important.
You will also need a G (4 mm) crochet hook, or whichever size allows you to match my gauge (or produce a nice fabric, as explained above), and a yarn needle.
This triangle crochet shawl pattern is available free here on my blog, but if you want a PDF so that you can print or save it, you can purchase that on Ravelry, Etsy, or LoveCrafts.
And as you crochet the Alera Shawl, why not read or listen to the book that inspired it?! Get Furies of Calderon, the first book in the series, with my Amazon affiliate link right here.
Do you like the look of the shawl cuff I wore with my Alera Shawl? The cuff was made by Knox Mountain Knit Co and you can get your own on their Etsy site.

V-st section
Find a helpful how-to video for this section here.
Note When working the first row of v-st 2 dc will be placed together in the same st with a st skipped between each group of 2. Each group of 2 dc counts as a v-st. In additional rows of v-st, each set of 2 dc will be worked into the space between the 2 dc of the v-st below. The dc themselves will be skipped, in other words, no stitches will be worked into their tops, except where the instructions state otherwise.
Row 1 (RS) Ch 2, 2 dc in first st (v-st made), *sk next st, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * across to last 3 sts, sk 2 sts, 2 dc in last st, turn — 100 sts.

Hello! I’m loving the pattern so far, but noticed an omission in the free version: in the TEXTURED SECTION, you completely forgot to add in row 17, which is also a dc2tog row (from what I can tell). Because it’s a dc2tog row, it doesn’t really change your stitch count, which is great, but it is a little confusing that the row doesn’t exist at all.
Thank you so much for bringing that to my attention! I think that must have been a copy and paste mistake. It is fixed now. Enjoy!
This is absolutely gorgeous!!! I can’t wait to make one! Thank you!!
Thank you and you’re welcome!
