Bobble stitch crochet square

Crochet squares are such versatile little projects. This bobble stitch crochet square can be put together to make a poncho, scarf, sweater, blanket, table runner, pillow, and more! This square was particularly designed to be a part of the Sampler Poncho CAL hosted by Itchin’ For Some Stitchin’.

How to crochet a bobble stitch

Not sure how to crochet a bobble stitch? No problem! I have a video for that. You can see a tutorial video for the bobble stitch here.

Basically it involves putting 5 partial double crochet stitches all in one spot, then finishing off the tops of them together. That cluster of several stitches pops out into this little pocket.

The written instructions for a bobble stitch look like this: [Yarn over (yo), place hook in designated st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops] 5 times, yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1 tightly to close.

One important tip to working in bobble stitch is that in the non-bobble st rows, you don’t want to place a stitch in those chains that you made to close the bobbles, just in the bobbles themselves. So look for those chains and skip them.

What other bobble stitch crochet projects can I make?

I have three other crochet designs that use bobble stitches! I also have an e-book of bobble stitch capital letters that is available on Ravelry and Etsy.

Notes About Using Charts

Each row of the written instructions has a matching row on the corresponding chart. Bobbles are represented by the colored boxes and bobble rows are all WS rows. Each box represents one stitch. Because the squares are symmetric, it won’t matter which side you start on for each row.
