Unique free crochet winter cap pattern

Giant Redwood Cap is a free crochet winter cap pattern from yours truly! This unique hat design is made from five motifs that include simple cables worked out from the center. My favorite part about this hat is how the various lines of the motifs come together. The adult size fitted cap takes about 320 yds of sport weight yarn.

What yarn should I use for this hat?

Originally I crocheted this winter cap in Bijou Basin Ranch Sportweight, which is 100% Yak. Bijou Basin Ranch has gone out of business. The closest replacement I have found is Yakima from Plymouth Yarn, which is a sport weight blend of Merino wool and yak fiber. You could also choose a basic sport weight wool and that would probably work just fine.

How is this hat made?

This crochet winter cap is made of five crochet squares seamed together like a cube with one open side. That may seem strange, since our heads are not cube-shaped. However, the hat stretches to fit a head nicely when you put it on.

Each crochet square starts in the center and is worked much like a solid granny square. The difference is that this square has a simple cable running from the center of the square to the middle of each edge. If you’ve never made cables before, or used crochet post stitches before, the following tutorials may be helpful.

Seaming

Always place motifs RS together when seaming. Seam so that there is one motif in the middle, with another motif seamed to each side of it, making a plus-sign shape, as in the diagram below. Seam motifs 2, 3, 4, and 5 to motif 1. Then seam neighboring motifs together, forming a cube shape with one empty side. Seam motif 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and 5 to 2.

You can use a tapestry needle and yarn to whipstitch squares together. Or you can use your crochet hook and yarn, working through both thicknesses, joining at corner with sl st, and sl st across each side, as in this video tutorial.

Edging

Note: Do not turn between rnds while working the edging.

Rnd 1: Join yarn with sl st to any st along bottom edge of hat. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in each st and ch sp along bottom edge of hat, join to first st with sl st – 64 [72] sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, *Fpdc in next st, Bpdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st with sl st.

Repeat Rnd 2 until ribbing measures 2-4 inches wide, depending on desired length. Fasten off.
