Giant Redwood Cap, a Free Crochet Hat Pattern

Giant Redwood Cap, Free Crochet Hat Pattern from Banana Moon Studio

Giant Redwood Cap is a free crochet pattern from Banana Moon Studio! This unique hat design is made from five motifs that include simple cables worked out from the center. My favorite part about this hat is how the various lines of the motifs come together. The fitted cap takes about 320 yds of sport weight yarn.

Originally I crocheted this hat in Bijou Basin Ranch Sportweight, which is 100% Yak. Bijou Basin Ranch has gone out of business. The closest replacement I have found is Yakima from Plymouth Yarn, which is a sport weight blend of Merino wool and yak fiber. You could also choose a basic sport weight wool and that would probably work just fine.

To make this hat, you will make five motifs and seam them together, then add ribbing to the bottom edge. This pattern is FREE! Scroll down for the free pattern, or purchase the ad-free PDF on Ravelry, Etsy, or LoveCrafts!

Giant Redwood Cap, a Free Crochet Hat Pattern

Designed by April Garwood of Banana Moon Studio

Finished Size About 20 inch circumference (will stretch to fit larger head sizes)

Yarn Bijou Basin Ranch Sportweight (100% Yak; 3.5oz/99g; 328yds/300m) Deep Red: 1 skein for fitted cap, 2 skeins for slouchy hat. This yarn has been discontinued. As a substitution I suggest Yakima from Plymouth Yarn, which is a sport weight blend of Merino wool and yak fiber. You could also choose a basic sport weight wool and that would probably work just fine.

Hook H/8 (5.00mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions Yarn needle

Gauge Finished motif = Abt 5 inches or 12.5cm square

Notes

  • When working motifs, you will turn between rounds. When working ribbed edging, you will not turn between rnds.
  • Hat is made of motifs, seamed together after making them. Then, the bottom of the hat is edged with post stitch ribbing.
  • You can make a fitted cap with 5 motifs, or add 4 more to the bottom to make a slouchy hat.

 Seaming

Always place motifs RS together when seaming. Seam so that there is one motif in the middle, with another motif seamed to each side of it, making a plus-sign shape. Seam motifs 2, 3, 4, and 5 to motif 1. To make a slouchy hat, attach another motif to the outer edges of motifs 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Then seam neighboring motifs together, forming a cube shape with one empty side. Seam motif 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and 5 to 2. If making a slouchy hat, continue seaming down edges of additional motifs.

Edging

Rnd 1: Join yarn with sl st to any st along bottom edge of hat. Ch 2 (does not count as a st), dc in each st and ch sp along bottom edge of hat, join to first st with sl st — 72 sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, *Fpdc in next st, Bpdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st with sl st.

Rnds 3-4: Repeat Rnd 2. Fasten off.
