Free Crochet Shrug Pattern for Children

Seashore Shrug is a long-sleeved, cabled crochet shrug for girls in sizes 2[4, 6, 8, 10]. This free crochet shrug pattern is simple and versatile.

This is an easy pattern, with most of the stitches being basic double crochet. The cable of course uses post stitches and treble stitches, but nothing you can’t figure out with a simple tutorial on post stitches and cables. Fortunately, I have just such a video to go along with this pattern!

What yarn should I get for this crochet pattern?

The yarn I recommend for this free crochet shrug pattern is Berroco Vintage #5125 Aquae, a worsted weight acrylic/wool/nylon blend that is soft, machine-washable and easy to work with. It comes in a fantastic variety of colors — 75 different shades, to be exact! I enjoyed using it and appreciate the good stitch definition for the cable.

This child’s crochet shrug pattern is worked from sleeve-edge to sleeve-edge. You can easily modify this pattern to make a crochet shrug with shorter sleeves. Use the gauge and some math to determine how many rows you need to make the sleeve the desired length, then work that many rows before splitting, and that many rows after bringing it back together for the other sleeve.

This little girl crochet shrug pattern is available in a few different ways. First it is available for free right here in this post, just keep scrolling. It is also available as an individual PDF on Ravlery and Etsy, and also it is available as part of an ebook on both Ravelry and Etsy.

Notes

Most rows begin with the instruction to “Lengthen loop, ch 1.”  This means to lengthen the loop on your hook to the height of the row you are about to begin, which in this case will be about dc height.  Getting it exactly right is not important.  This is done to avoid the gap caused by a traditional turning chain, and does not count as a st. My companion how-to video demonstrates this. Click here to see it!

Pattern begins in the round at one sleeve edge, separates into rows to make an opening for the neck, chest, and shoulders, and then returns to working in the round for the other sleeve.  It ends at the other sleeve edge.
