Yarn made with recycled plastic?!

Cascade Yarns ReVerb is a fantastic yarn made with recycled plastic and recycled alpaca! I LOVE this! It is environmentally friendly because it takes waste and turns it into something so useful and beautiful. The yarn is soft and will be great for making wearables and blankets.

It comes in ten colors, three of which you can see in the photo above. Each skein is 100 g (3.5 oz) in weight and 273 yds (250 m) in length. The yarn must be hand-washed and lain flat to dry.

To produce this yarn made with recycled plastic, the plastic is first chopped into little pieces. Then the plastic is extruded into long very thin fibers. That is then blended with recycled alpaca fibers, leftovers from the textiles industry. This makes a soft, slightly fuzzy yarn.

Why on earth would I want yarn made with recycled plastic?

One issue facing plastic recycling is that there isn’t a large demand or market for the plastic once it has been recycled. It is often cheaper for manufacturers to use new plastic, so they often do. Without more buyers for the recycled plastic, more can’t be recycled. If more people purchase goods that use recycled plastic, more manufacturers will want to use it. If more manufacturers buy recycled plastic to use for their products, then more can be recycled to accommodate that demand.

A recycled yarn made with plastic bottles like Cascade Yarns ReVerb can increase the demand and market for recycled plastic. The more crafters purchase this yarn and others like it, the more we can help create a market for recycled plastic so that less of it winds up in landfills! For more information on plastic recycling, read this infographic from National Geographic. Or read this presentation from NPR.

In addition to ReVerb, Cascade Yarns also has ReFine, made from recycled wool, nylon, and viscose. And their yarn ReVive is 100% Recycled wool.

What can I make with this yarn?

I have a free crochet pattern available in this eco-friendly yarn! It is called Ramona Scarf, seen below. Ramona scarf takes this recycled yarn from plastic bottles and makes it into small solid granny squares. Those are seamed on the right side with a visible contrasting seam to form one section of the infinity scarf. The other section is worked in stripes of double crochet. I like to wear the scarf wound double around my neck and the two sections make an interesting and beautiful scarf!

Video review of yarn made with recycled plastic

In this video I show you just a glimpse of both crocheting and knitting with the yarn. I also show you the finished Ramona Scarf that I mentioned above so that you can get an idea what it’s like to work with and wear.

What do you think of working with yarn made with recycled plastic? What are your thoughts about this yarn specifically? Would you use it?
