What weight is Cascade Aereo yarn?
Cascade Aereo yarn is a worsted weight, medium, or size 4 yarn. I found it to make a very flexible, pliant fabric, but it doesn’t drape easily because it is so lightweight compared to other yarns of similar thickness. So the fabric wants to float more than drape.
It is a strong yarn since it is constructed with the nylon tube. It is not prone to pulling apart like some twisted and plied yarns, but it can be broken by hand if you pull hard enough. Having tried it myself, I think this would require intentional effort to break the yarn.
I did find that the wool and alpaca fibers can be pulled out of the nylon tube with your fingers, leaving a bare nylon mesh tube, so don’t invite your toddlers to pick at it. This is really no different than any other yarn that could be picked apart by pulling out fibers, except that in this case, the yarn would still be structurally intact even if the fibers were pulled out.
Follow the care instructions of hand washing and laying flat to dry and don’t get cozy with any Velcro while you wear it and you should be fine.
What can I crochet or knit with this yarn?
I designed a blanket shrug with Cascade Aereo Yarn. It’s called Ada Shrug. The pattern is written in just one size that will fit most. It’s designed to be worn oversized. The pattern is easily adjusted though if you would prefer it larger or smaller.
The shrug pattern is beginner-friendly or makes a good TV watching project for a more experienced crocheter. The finished shrug is lightweight, comfy, and casual.

I haven’t personally designed any knit items in this yarn, though my finished knit swatch felt and looked really lovely! Cascade Yarns has some knit patterns to offer free on their site. Despite the fuzzy feel of the yarn it has surprisingly good stitch definition. I’ve seen colorwork projects in similar types of yarn from other companies and also been impressed with the sharp colorwork created with this type of yarn.
What is Cascade Aereo like to work with?
Wonderful! Cascade Aereo yarn is very soft and pleasant on your hands! Check out the video below to see it in action in both crochet and knitting. I’ll show you a little crocheting and a little knitting with it and also what the finished fabric looked like.
My conclusion? This yarn is a winner! It makes very soft and cozy wearables that are unbelievable lightweight. If you want a warm sweater that feels super light, this yarn is an excellent choice. I’d love a wide, long scarf in this that I could wrap around my neck and face a few times!
