Fingerless mitts crochet pattern

This fingerless mitts crochet pattern makes a perfect gift for Christmas or Valentine’s Day for someone you love! The mitts begin with a ribbed cuff. Then you crochet the hand and thumb gusset around the edge of the cuff. The hearts are added later with surface slip stitch crochet.

What supplies will I need to crochet these mitts?

You’ll need one skein of Ancient Arts Yarn Lascaux Worsted. I used the color called Heart. This is a worsted weight wool yarn made with the wool of rare sheep breeds, so you can feel good about helping to conserve rare breeds when you use this yarn! In addition to this main color of yarn, you’ll need a scrap amount of white worsted weight yarn for the hearts.

You’ll need a size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook.

I use and recommend Furl’s Streamline Metal crochet hooks!

You will also need two stitch markers and a tapestry needle.

What skills will I need to know to crochet these mitts?

You will be starting with crocheting the cuff by single crocheting in the back loop. You can see a photo tutorial for that here.

Then you’ll seam the cuff by crocheting through two layers at once. I have a video tutorial for that here.

Then you’ll turn the cuff right side out and crochet around the row ends to begin the hand. As you crochet the hand, you’ll use stitch markers to mark the locations for increases to make the thumb gusset.

When it’s time to make the thumbhole, you’ll be skipping the stitches between the markers for that one round. From there, it’s just even single crochet rounds to the end.

The hearts are made using surface slip stitches. You can see a video tutorial for that here.

Helena Heart Mitts, a Fingerless Mitts Crochet Pattern

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Available Sizes: Children 4 [6, 8] Adult S [M, L, XL].

Finished Measurements: Hand circumference 5 ½ [6, 6 ½] 7 [7 ½, 8, 9 ¼] inches; total length 7 ¼ [8 ¼, 8 ¾] 9 ½ [10, 11, 12] inches.

Yarn: Ancient Arts Yarn Lascaux Worsted (25% Manx Loaghtan, 75% Punta Arenas Wool; 220 yds; 100 g; yarn weight: worsted/4/medium): 1 skein of color Heart, and about 3 ⅓ yds of worsted weight white yarn.

Crochet Hook: I/9 (5.5 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.

The gloves begin with a cuff stitched in rows of single crochet in the back loop only. If you aren’t familiar with stitching in the back loop only, see this photo tutorial.

After seaming the two short ends of this piece, you will crochet in the row ends around the cuff to begin the hand of the mitt.

Two stitch markers (m) will be used to mark the locations for increases to make the thumb gusset. To form the thumbhole, the stitches between the markers will be skipped.

From there, you will work even in rnds to finish the hand.

The heart is formed using surface crochet. You can see a video tutorial for surface crochet here. Surface crochet is easiest without yarn tails in the way, so I suggest you weave these in before beginning the heart.

Mitt

Cuff

Ch 13

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2^nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch, turn – 12 sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc blo in each st across, turn.

Repeat Row 2 for a total of 16 [18, 20] 22 [24, 26, 30] rows.

Seaming

After turning, bring beginning short end up behind and even with working edge. Ch 1, working through both layers, sl st through each st across to seam.

Turn RS out.

Right Hand

Rnd 1: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 [3, 4] 4 [5, 5, 6] row ends, 2 sc in next row end, repeat from * around to last 0 [2, 0] 2 [0, 2, 2] row ends, sc in any remaining row ends, join to first st with sl st, turn – 20 [22, 24] 26 [28, 30, 34] sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first 6 [7, 7] 8 [8, 9, 10] sts, place stitch marker (m) in last 2 sts worked, sc in each remaining st, join to first st with sl st, turn.

Note: As work progresses, move markers up into outermost sts of each increase, so that markers move further apart after each increase.

Rnd 3 (inc): Ch 1, sc in each st to first m, 2 sc in each marked st, sc in each remaining st, join to first st with sl st, turn – 22 [24, 26] 28 [30, 32, 36] sts.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join to first st with sl st, turn.

Rnd 5 (inc): Ch 1, sc in each st to first m, 2 sc in marked st, sc in each st to second m, 2 sc in marked st, sc in each remaining st, join to first st with sl st, turn – 24 [26, 28] 30 [32, 34, 38] sts.

Alternate repeating Rnds 4 and 5 for a total of 8 [10, 10] 12 [12, 12, 14] rnds from beginning of hand, ending with a Rnd 4 repeat – 26 [30, 32] 36 [38, 40, 46] sts.

Thumbhole rnd: Ch 1, sc to first m, sc in marked st, sc in next marked st, skipping sts between markers, sc in each remaining st, join to first st with sl st, turn – 20 [22, 24] 26 [28, 30, 34] sts.

Repeat Rnd 4 until you’ve worked a total of 12 [12, 14] 16 [18, 20, 22] rnds from beginning of hand. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Left Hand

Work Cuff and Seaming as for Right Hand.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 [3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6] row ends, 2 sc in next row end, repeat from * 3 times, sc in any remaining row ends, join to first st with sl st, turn – 20 [22, 24] 26 [28, 30, 34] sts.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in first 16 [17, 19] 20 [22, 23, 26] sts, place m in last 2 sts worked, sc in each remaining st, join to first st with sl st, turn.

Work all remaining rnds as for Right Hand. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Notes

There are 2 sizes of hearts to choose from. I recommend the smaller heart design for children’s sizes and the larger heart design for adult sizes. My model mitts are an adult L and use the larger size of heart.

Begin by putting the mitt on and using a st marker to mark the location of the center of the back of the hand.

If you don’t have a hand the right size to try them on, fold the mitt with the thumbhole fully to the palm side of the hand, then center the heart on the back of the hand.

Rnd 1: With white yarn make a sl knot, but do not place it on hook, insert hook from the RS into any stitch around the outside of the heart, place the sl knot on the hook from the underside of the fabric, pull this loop through the space, *following diagram, place hook into next space, yo, pull through space and loop on hook, repeat from * around the design.

When you have pulled up the last loop before coming back to the start (figure 1), cut the yarn leaving a 4-6 inch tail and pull the loop until the end comes all the way through to the RS (figure 2). Use a yarn needle to thread this tail under the bottom end of the first surface sl st (figure 3). Then use the yarn needle to thread tail back through the space where it comes out (figure 4). This completes the final surface sl st, joining it to the first one (figure 5). Weave in ends.
