Easy crochet shawl pattern

Idabel Shawl is a free easy crochet shawl pattern from Banana Moon Studio! It is a large triangular shawl or scarf worked in wattle stitch, one of my favorite crochet stitch patterns. It is striped with three colors of Ancient Arts Yarns Nettle Soft DK, which lives up to it’s name — it is soft! I used Lapis Lazuli for the main color and Forget-Me-Not and Nothing But Blue Skies for the coordinating colors. Check your LYS for this yarn, or click the link below:

This is an easy pattern! Maybe not for your first project, but once you can chain, single crochet, and double crochet, this shawl is very doable! See links to my video tutorials below to learn these basic stitches!

Note

This pattern is written in standard US terms.

Even-numbered rows are RS rows.

When you need to change colors, begin the last st of the row before the change, but pause before the last yarn over, when you have two loops on your hook. Cut the current color with at least a 6 inch tail, yarn over with the new color, leaving at least a 6 inch tail, pull this loop through the two loops on your hook, turn, and begin the next row working with the new color. These two ends may be a little loose. Snug them up just before you weave in your ends.

Use the 3 inch x 4 ½ inch cardboard. Hold the cardboard so that it is taller than it is wide. Holding strands of Lapis Lazuli and Forget-Me-Not together, hold the ends even with the bottom edge of the cardboard and wrap the yarn long-ways around the cardboard 18 times. Cut the two strands even with the bottom edge of the cardboard.

Cut a strand of Lapis Lazuli about 17 inches long and use a yarn needle to run it under the strands of yarn on the front of the cardboard. Remove the needle. Putting the two ends of this strand together, pull up so that they come to rest under the very top of the bunch of yarn on the cardboard. Tie this strand of yarn tightly around the top of the yarn on the cardboard. Slide the bunch of yarn off the cardboard. Cut the loops at the bottom.

With another strand of Lapis Lazuli, about 10 inches long, tie it around the tassel about 1 inch below the top knot. Use a small crochet hook to come up through the middle of the tassel, grab the strands of this knotted yarn, and pull them down through the middle of the tassel to hide them. With scissors, trim tassel ends even. Repeat for additional tassels.

Using strands of tassel top knot, tie one tassel to each corner of the shawl. Weave the ends of the tassel knot into the WS of the shawl.

And there you go! You’ve finished this easy crochet shawl pattern. I’d love it if you’d share your experience and a photo in my Facebook group!
