How to Knit a Mitten, Part 1: How to Knit Ribbing in the Round

I could also call this post, “How to use circular knitting needles in the Magic Loop Method,” or “How to make mittens,” or “How to do the long tail cast on.” There are several skills involved that are all great things to learn!

The primary purpose of this tutorial, however, is to teach you how to make the items in the Wanette Winter Set, which is a free pattern that I shared here on my blog a few months back. I am making tutorial videos for the mittens of the set since they are the most complex, and because the ribbed cuff with which they begin, is exactly the same stitch used for the other two pieces.

The picture below is the “Wanette Winter Set.” You can get the pattern by clicking here.

For this project you will need Plymouth Yarns Gina Chunky and a set of size 9 needles, either double pointed needles (DPN) or a 32″ long circular. I used circular needles for mine.

The first video is below. This takes you through the construction of the ribbed cuff. Videos 2 and 3 show you how to make the hand, thumbhole, fingertip decreases, and thumb. You can see them in my post “How to Knit a Mitten, Parts 2 and 3.”

Let’s learn how to knit ribbing!

Happy stitching!
