Success! You're on the list.

This fun Valentine crochet project is made in Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino, a soft, squishy yarn that could be considered either DK or worsted weight. There are 220 yds per skein. You’ll need 3 skeins of the MC, and very small amounts of the three contrast colors. In fact, this makes a great scrappy project if you want to grab some DK yarn from your stash for the hearts! Get Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino here (affiliate link).

Scarf

Work first 4 rows in Granny Stitch, as follows:

Ch 29

Row 1 (RS) Skip first ch, sc across, turn – 28 sts.

Row 2 Ch 2 (counts as a st now and throughout), dc in first st, *skip 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, repeat from * to last 3 sts, skip 2 sts, 2 dc in last st, turn – 28 sts.

Row 3 Ch 2, skip first 2 sts, *3 dc in next space between groups of stitches**, skip next 3 dc, repeat from * across to last 2 sts, ending last rep at **, skip next st, dc in last st, turn – 29 sts.

Row 4 Ch 2, dc in space between first 2 sts, *skip next 3 sts**, 3 dc in next space between groups of stitches, skip next 3 dc, repeat from * across to last st, ending last rep at **, dc in space between last 2 sts, dc in last st, turn – 28 sts.

First Colorwork Heart

You will continue to work in Granny Stitch. Alternate repeating Rows 3 and 4 for pattern.

On the chart, each full size box represents a group of 3 sts. The half-size boxes at the ends of every other row represent the groups of two stitches at each end of every Row 4 repeat. For the first heart that begins on Row 5, you will hold the chart right side up.

To change colors, work the last st before the color change to the last yo, let the MC yarn hang to the WS of your work, leaving your end around 6” long, place a loop of the new color around the end of your hook and pull this through the two loops on your hook to complete the dc. Make sure the end hangs to the WS of your work. Make the necessary stitches with the new color. When you are finished with that color, cut your yarn leaving a 6” tail, work the last st of that color up to the last yo, using a second ball or bobbin of MC, place a loop of the new yarn over the end of the hook and pull this through the two loops on your hook to complete the dc. Finish the row with MC. To keep the back of your scarf looking nice, I suggest that the only place you carry your yarn across the WS is with the MC between rows on the same sides of the heart. Use a separate skein or bobbin of MC on each side of the heart and for the one patt rep in the middle of the last row of the heart so that you aren’t making floats of MC across the heart.

Main Body of Scarf

Rows 14 -132 Alternating repeating Rows 4 and 3, begin and end with a Row 4 repeat.

Second Colorwork Heart

Holding the chart upside down work the second colorwork heart. It will be worked in the same manner as the first heart, but starting with the top of the heart and working to the bottom of it so that it will face correctly when worn.

Scarf End

Row 142 Repeat Row 4.

Row 143 Repeat Row 3.

Row 144 Repeat Row 4.

Row 145 Ch 1, sc in each st across – 28 sts. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends underneath the stitches of the same color. Try to keep the back looking neat since scarves don’t usually stay perfectly flat and people will probably see the underside of the scarf. Block. Finished!
