Crochet for a Cause, Operation Underground Railroad

Beginning with this month, July 2019, purchases of the patterns pictured above, will support Operation Underground Railroad. These seven patterns were originally published together as an ebook. Purchases of the ebook will also support O.U.R.

Let’s take a few minutes to explain what Operation Underground Railroad is and why I choose to support it. Their website explains, “We exist to rescue children from sex trafficking. In the past five years of existence, O.U.R. has rescued 2,603 victims and assisted in the arrests of more than 1,365 traffickers around the world.”

When I first learned about O.U.R. and their work I thought, is this really that big a problem in today’s world? Maybe you are asking the same question. Here are some statistics from an O.U.R. fact sheet:

“The International Labour Organization estimates there are 40.3 million modern-day slaves.

1 in 4 slavery victims are children.

71% of slavery victims are women and girls.

2 million children, the majority of them girls, are sexually exploited in the mulitbillion-dollar commercial sex industry.”

I don’t know about you, but those stats are alarming! It breaks my heart to think of so many children being abused, not to mention all the women and men!

I have four daughters of my own. I consider how I want the world to be a safe place for them, how I would feel if one of them were trafficked. I don’t ever want that to happen to them! I don’t want something so horrible to happen to any girl, or to anyone!

Our family has donated to Operation Underground Railroad regularly for years. I also have them designated to receive money through Amazon Smile. Did you know that you can go to smile.amazon.com to shop from Amazon, and they will donate a portion of most purchases to the non-profit of your choice? Choose Operation Underground Railroad!

Now I want to do more! I will be keeping track of the purchases of the seven patterns from this collection and donating the proceeds to O.U.R. for at least the rest of this year, maybe permanently. Proceeds = purchase price, minus the fees I pay to Rav/Etsy/LoveCrafts and to PayPal to list it and accept your payment.

Some of the patterns in this collection are available as free patterns on my blog, but all have a PDF version available to purchase. I don’t have a way for that money to automatically go to O.U.R., so I will make a monthly donation to equal the proceeds from the sales of these seven patterns.

You also have the option to donate directly. Click here to donate to O.U.R. directly.
