Learn to Wind a Center-pull Ball of Yarn by Hand

Learn to wind a center pull ball of yarn by hand! Tutorial by April Garwood of Banana Moon Studio (2)

Maybe you don’t have a ball-winder and a swift. I know most of us have seen the “hack” of using a toilet paper tube and hand mixer to wind our yarn, but the idea of my yarn, or worse yet, my hand mixer, touching a toilet paper tube just really grosses me out. Maybe you’re with me on that one. Or perhaps you are just crafting on the go, which is pretty common for me. In any of these situations, you may need to wind a center-pull ball of yarn by hand, since many luxury yarns come in hanks instead of center-pull balls or skeins.

Good news, this can be done by hand! Check out my tutorial video below and I will show you just how to do this! But if you, by chance, want to purchase a ball-winder and swift, I recommend this set from Knit Picks!

Happy stitching!

  1. Great video! I don’t own a swift and had been wondering how I could wind balls with some twisted hanks I purchased some years back. Time to stop admiring them and make something with them😉Thanks April!
